BEN DEELEY PASSES ON

DEATH OF FAMOUS JOCKEY RIDER OF MANY WINNERS A Press Association message from Auckland yesterday announced the death, in the Auckland of Ben Deeley, formerly one of the .bestknown jockeys in New Zealand.

Long before the mighty Gloaming appeared on the scene Ben Deeley had made a name for himself as one of the greatest horsemen in the country that knew Charlie Jenkins, “Tod” Hewitt, F. D. Jones, Jim Buchanan and Hector Gray, with most of whom he was a contemporary. He had a great scat, a wonderful pair of hands and a head that many a trainer or owner would give a small fortune for these days. With these and plenty of courage he rode to fame.

It is many a year since Deeley rode his first winner, away back in the early years of the present century, but it was not long before it became apparent that he had a future before him. As long ago as 1903 he appeared as the rider of Golden Rose, winner of the Easter Handicap at T’lcrslie, while twenty years later he was still steering them to victory. Sprinters and stayers, rogues and quiet ’uns, they all came alike to him, and if there was a race to be won Deeley, the favourite of the public, was there to do his best. In Australia, too, he could ride winners, as he proved when he paid visits to the Commonwealth, but it was when associated with Mr G. D. Greenwood’s stable that he did best. As the pilot of the mighty Gloaming in the majority of the successes that came the way of the great son of The Welkin,* Deeley had a great responsibility, and there was none who could point the finger of suspi hi at him. The complete list of winners ridden by Deeley during his career would be too lengthy to publish in these columns, but it should suffice to say that he topped the list of winning jockeys in New Zealand on several occasions. For instance, in the 1911-12 season he rode 88 winners, which was 40 more than the next horseman on the list. Among the principal events in which Deeley rode the winner, are the following: V.R.C.
