“SLAB” TBOUT IN THE W AIR AU
M AKLBOEOUGH INVESTIGATION [Per Press Association.! BLENHEIM, Dec. 2. As a result of the fact that quite a few poor, or diseased brown trout, known as “slabs,” have been taken from the Wairau river this season, the Afarlborough Acclimatisation Society sent a specimen to the fresh water research committee for investigation and report. The secretary, Air F. Atogridge, has now received a report in which the research committee says: “The fish was most interesting, as it had a very badly diseased heart. This confirms other examinations wo have made, which show that heart disease usually coexists with very poor condition.” The committee expressed the wish to be supplied with further examples for examination.
In conversation with an Express reporter, Mr Mogridge remarked that a peculiar feature about the occurrence of “slabs.” was that they were found only in the tidal portions of the Wairau, so far as was known.
