TURAKINA THE RIFLE CLUB A competition for a trophy was fired for on Saturday, there being a very strong crosswind blowing; other the conditions were good. Next Saturday a trophy donated by Air Grant will be competed for. The following are the scores:—

MARTON VISIT OF DESOUTER MONOPLANE Arrangements have been made for the visit of Alajor G. A. Cowper in his Desout-cr monoplane at Marton at 2 o’clock this afternoon and the lauding will tak< place on Airs FullertonSmith’s property on Calico Line, which is about half a mile from the Alarton Post Office. The 'layur (Mr F. Purnell) and councilbos have been extended an invitation to attend and the majority have signified their intention of being present. The monoplone is a threescater and the Alajor will make several flights over the town. Alajor Cowper’s visit is in connection with the establishment of a permanent stopping place at Alarton for the Wellington-Taranaki air service, and he is of opinion that the site selected in Alarton is one of the best he has seen in his travels. THE CIVIC THEATRE “THE FLAME OF LOVE” At the Civic Theatre this evening the British International Pictures Ltd. will present Anna Alay Wong in “The Flame of Love,” in which she will be supported by John Longden, George Schnell, Mona Goya. Fred Schwarz, and Percy Standing. See and hear this exotic musical and glamorous romance which is beautifully and lavishly produced with haunting melodies, magnificent settings, charming singing, talking and dancing. On Saturday and Alonday the star picture “King of Jazz’’ will be screened at the Civic Theatre. OLD TIMERS’ CYCLE RACE Tn response to repeated requests Air P. Cosgrove, of the Club Hotel, has decided to promote another old-timers’ cycle race, which will probably bo held on Wednesday, December 17. ‘'Nomination fees will be devoted to providing Christmas cheer for those in distress in the town. Good prizes are being offered and the course will be four times round High Street, Broadway, Bond Street and Skerman Street block. Friday, December 19: Special window display, illuminations switched on at 8 p.m.; spotting competition commences on the same lines as last year; Alarton Brass Band parados at 8 p.m.: Christmas Cheer Concert Cabaret commences at 8.30 p.m.

Saturday, December 20* Spotting competition continues; Hunterville Pipe Band parade at 7.30 till 8.45 p.m.; athletic sports meeting commences at 8.30 in the Park.

Alonday, December 22: The spotting competition continues, Alarton Brass Band and Boy Scouts parade from the Druids’ Hall to Signal Street, commencing at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, December 23: The spotting competition continues; Alarton Brass Band appears in town at 7.30 p.m. heading a grand fancy dress pageant starting from the Druids’ Hall, everybody to join in in fancy dress. The procession will much up town to Signal Street, thence back to the Park, where prizes will be awarded to children only for the best fancy dress and poster costume. Free balloons will then be distributed to the children from the pavilion. Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), Father Christmas appears in town at 2.30 p.m. and distributes free lucky packets from Air Gould’s balcony. The spotting competition continues until 10.30 p.m. Air J. D. Gorrie presented the report of the entertainment committee and proposed Messrs 11. Low and A. Way for election to that committee. —Carried. Air H. Low briefly outlined the objects of the cabaret night. GENERAL NEWS The Alarton Retailers’ Association has decided to keep business places open until 10 o’clock on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and to close on the Saturdays of those weeks at 5.30 p.m. During November 3.49 inches of rain were recorded m Turakina, the average for the month over a period of 16 years being 2.84. Rain fell on 30 days, the heaviest fall being on the 23rd., wlfen .62 inches were recorded. In the eleven months the fall lias been 27.65 inches compared with an average for the period of 31.48. The “spotting” competition in connection with the Carnival Trade Week commences on Friday, December 19, at 8 p.m. and closes at 10.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Shopkeepers will post the winning results on their own windows on New Year’s Eve. A general committee meeting will be held on Monday, December 29, when the ballot box will be opened.
