GLIDER IN WANGANUI

CLUB MAY BE FORMED SUITABLE GROUND AVAILABLE. Glider Clubs have become very popular in England, Germany and America. Several clubs Lave been formed already in New Zealand and it is now proposed by certain Wanganui “would-be” fly era to form a Gliding Club in Wanganui. The sand dunes ami sand hills in the legion of the Air Port are most favourable for this sport. It is recognised where gliding clubs are in existance, that this forms the best method tor training of aircraft pilots, and that a glidcr'pilot proves a more apt pupil when training for his flying certificate. The Royal Aero Club in England, fosters gliding, by issuing three grades of certificates to gliding pilots. The “A” grade certificate is given to candidates having made .12 glides. A glide must have been made for 30 seconds followed by a normal landing. “B” grade certificate requires a flight, of one minute with two curves in the form of an S followed by a normal landing.

“C” grade requires a flight of at least five minutes at a height greater than that of the point of departure. It is not generally known that a glider has been in process of construction in Wanganui for some months by several enthusiasts. The machine is now nearly completed and it is hoped to have a trial flight in the course of the next few weeks. It is also possible that a meeting will be called shortly with the object of forming a Glider Club, the date of which will be advertised. Anyone interested in this new sport will be welcomed.
