Mrs LEVI BUCK I
EARLY SETTLER PASSES

The death occurred at Pa'ekakariki last week of Mrs Levi Buck. She was born on a small island off the southern end of Kapiti in 1842 and was a daughter of pHiin Ames, master of a schooner which used to trade between Sydney and New Zealand. He settled on the Island in .1839, believing it to be safer there than on the mainland. Later on his family shifted to Wellington, where they had lived practically ever since. Airs Buck is said to be the first white child christened by the Rev. Hadfield, afterwards Bishop Hadfield. She married Air Buck, formerly of the Postal Department and an enthusiastic cricketer of the early days. She leaves a son. Ernest, in Christchurch, and a daughter, Mrs Keeling, of Palmerston North.
