MARTON AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES The Marton Chamber of Commerce has received advice that the material for the JUitomatic telephone at Marton will bej||ipped next month. It is anticipated that the installation work will commerce early in the New Year. A "GIFT” EVENING” Over 80 friends of Miss Nina Frecklington tendered her a "gift evening” at the residence of her sister, Airs Avis Poppe, on Thursday evening. Aliss Frccklington’s marriage to Air Alan Hayden, of Feilding, takes place shortly, and she was the recipient of many handsome gifts, in addition to showers of good wishes. A dance was held in the wool shed to the music supplied by the Bonny Glen Orchestra, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Mr Le Groves rendered a song while “extras” were played by Air Ralph Poppe. LADIES’ HOCKEY. RANGITIKEI v. TARANAKI. The Rangitikei ladies’ rep team vis-, ited Hawera on Wednesday and were narrowly defeated by 2 goals to 1, after the visitors had experienced a good deal of bad luck during the game. Rangitikei was represented by Airs Douns, Misses D. Illston, M. Jackson, M. Stent, R. Green (captain), G. Sanson, D. Davies, M. Clapham, B. Managh, M. Iwihau and Airs Signal. Taranaki team: Misses N. Shannon, N. Julian, R. Townsend, M. Gower, K. Tilley, B. Walker, M. Young, B. Stevens, B. Watkins, P. Wylds and 'J. Forsythe. With the advantage of a strong wind Taranaki was superior in the opening exchanges, the ball coming across field to Aliss Forsythe, but Miss Jackson cleared. Taranaki was in a good position when the visitors were penalised for kicks. Taranaki was dominating the game but Miss Managh broke away but play was soon back again Aliss Forsythe missing a shot by an inch. The home forwards raced away, the ball travelling right across the line from right wing to left. Another chance was lost when Aliss Forsyth skied the ball over the bar. The home forwards combined well and Mrs Downs was called upon to save several times. A melee in the goalmouth caught Mrs Downs out of position and Miss Jackson came in opportunely to save. Miss Managh led Rangitikei to neutral territory but the effort was not sustained. Misses Davies and Stent went away down the side-line, the offensive culminating in Taranaki conceding a The visitors were much more dangerous in the circle than their opponents and they took full advantage of this opportunity, Aliss Green goaling for Rangitikei. Heartened by their success Rangitikei improved, play becoming fast, and swinging from end to end. Half-time came with the visitors leading by a goal. Taranaki opened brightly. Miss Managh, however, reversed the position with a brilliant run down the line and only a delay in her centering pass saved the Taranaki eleven. Offside nullified some promising Rangitikei attacks, Taranaki assuming the offensive. Stalwart defence kept Taranaki out. Airs Downs being particularly prominent. At length, however, Taranaki’s chance came, and Aliss Watkins scored from the edge of the circle, and the home team nearly scored again, but Miss Wyld’s shot from a handy position was not straight. The ball came out to Miss Sanson, who swung a long pass infield to Miss Clapham. Aliss Capham went well up field, and was steadying herself for a shot when she was obstructed. Rangitikei could not obtain no advantage from the penalty corner, and though shortly afterwards Rangitikei netted, it was no goal, the ball having been hit from outside the circle. The visitors were suddenly driven back as the Taranaki vanguard, headed by Miss Stevens went away in a stirring raid. Taranaki nearly assumed the lead when Airs Young centred but Aliss Wylds missed. Rangitikei worked upfield just failing to score. For the second time Rangitikei found the net without scoring, the whistle having already blown for a prior infringement. Aliss Stevens secured to send Aliss Young away down the wing. Her centering pass demonstrated the weakness of the visitors’ formation of three full

backs, for the ball came to Miss Forsyth, who had an open goal, the home team assuming the lead. Rangitikei made a strong attack, Miss Shannon coming right out to savo 1 and the whistle sounded with the score: Taranaki 2; Rangitikei 1. Messrs C. J. AlcFadyen (Hawera/ and Le Comte (Marton) refereed. !' Prior to the match Air S. J. Catran welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Taranaki Hockey Association, and in reply, Afr G. McKoy, the manager of the Rangitikei team expressed the hope that the game would become an annual fixture. COURT LITTLE JOHN, A.O.F.
