BOROUGH COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council was held on Thursday night when there were present: The Deputy Mayor, Cr. W. Harris, in the chair, Crs. T. S. Fagg. R. Sigley, G. Anderson, C. A. C- McDonald, L. Baird, A. W. Ashwell, the electrical engineer (Air AV. Journeaux), the borough overseer (Mr C- Davis) and the town clerk (Air J. H. Lucas). An apology was received for (he absence of the Mayor, Mr H. W. B. Littlewood, who was out of town and had been delayed in returning home. The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a map from the Regional Planning Board showing the boundaries of the provisional planning area and asked the Council to express an opinion as they affected the district. After discussion it was decided not to offer any objection to the area boundaries. The Main Highways Board forwarde authority in respect of a maintenance grant for the Raetihi-Ohakune road (£23 7s 8d), Pipiriki-Raetihi road (£66 Is lid) and. Wanganui-Horopito road (£lO6 18s). The Main Highways Board forwarded ed a circular letter dealing with procedure to be adopted in making applications for grants, etc. The circular consisted of about ten pegs and was referred to the clerk. At the last meeting an application was received from a property owner in Grey Street, asking for permission to make a water connection. It appeared that the water pipe had been nut in at the expense of Mr R. A. Wilson, of Bulls, and he was asked on what conditions he would allow the connection. Mr Wilson replied that the understanding he had was that if anyone else desired a connection with the pipe line put in they should pay a proportionate part of the cost of the line and the digging of the trench. The sama system adopted by the Council with regard to erection of electric light, lines had been agreed to with regard to the w»ter pipe line. He was willing to allow the borough overseer to make an estimate and allow him what he considered a fair thing. After much discussion it was agreed that an estimate should be obtained and this, together with the usual fee for making a connection should be the price demanded from the applicant. The Municipal Association intimated that the next annual conference of delegates would be held at Rotorua on Wednesday, March 4, 1931, and following days.—lt was agreed to defer the appointment of a delegate till a later date.

The secretary of the Cancer Research Fund Appeal Committee forwarded a circular asking for a donation. The deputy-Mayor stressed the importance of research work with regard to cancer. He suggested making a donation to the funds.

It was decided to make a donation of £5. Intimation was received from the Municipal Association executive that application had been made to the Government, asking that any grant made be validated by a special Act. It was decided to refer back to the applicant a request for approval of a plan of subdivision of a section of lot 2. section 19.

It was resolved that a deputation wait upon the Waimarino County Council and discuss the terms upon which the services of the traffic inspector formerly employed by the traffic fees pool could be retained by both bodies. The expenses of the Mayor in connection with giving evidence on behalf of the Raetihi branch line railway before the Railway Commission at Wellington amounting to £3 18s 8d w«’e passed for payment. Reserves Mr S. Barakat wrote offering to leise a part of the reserve between the baths and the police reserve. He was willing to pay a rental of 12s 6d. The Council agreed to make an inspection of the locality before deciding to let any part of it for grazing. The ranger reported having impoundc R six head of stock during the month.

It was resolved to call for tenders for the lease of the water tower reserve for grazing purposes, sheep only. The matter was left to the chairman of the Reserves Committee to make arrangement g and accept the most suitable.

Cr. Vile called attention to the state of the rubbish dump in Parapara Road, and it was agreed that some improvement should be made and any person found breaking the regulations with regard to the placing of rubbish on reserves will be prosecuted. The reserves committee was authorised to spend up to £lO in removing the old tennis courts and planting trees in the reserve in Ward Street. Works Oommitteo

The Works Committee recommended that general maintenance be carried out; that the Valley road be gritted as opportunity offered; that Mr Cawthray be given notice to cut back trees overhanging the footpath n the Hukaroa road and Seddon street; that the Works Committee be empowered to do any urgent work that may bo required on the eastern approach to the Mako-

tudu bridge. The works foreman submitted the following report on the work done during the past month:— "General maintenance was carried out on the following roads and streets: Valley, Parapara, Seddon, Ohakune, Ward, Duncan, Alexandra and Grey

Streets. Water tables were cleared in Pitt, Queen and Duncan Streets. Footpaths were attended to in Pitt, Duncan, Ballance and King Streets. "Water Maintenance. —Leaks due to frost were repaired in. the office and fire brigade room, also a leak in Grey Street, under the bitumen surface in this was also repaired. The fire bell was tested and the fire plugs inspected during the month. "Sewers. —An inspection was made of the manholes and lampholes and the sand tray was cleaned out. A start has been made with the benzine store, the concrete base was put down in readiness to build the store when material is available. Four yards of screenings were delivered to the bridge and three yards to the butter factory during the month.” The chairman of the committee was authorised to dispose of any timber over from the shed which had been pulled down to make room for benzine store and the reports were adopted.
