AGRICULTURAL BURSARIES

REQUEST FROM TARANAKI [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, May 16. The committee apointed by the University Senate re the Taranaki request for bursaries to enable Taranaki students to pursue their studies at Massey College recommends ife Sci> ate to report to the Minister that it is in favour of an alteration in the Act to make provision for thc establishment of agricultural bursaries from the Taranaki scholraship fund, but, in view of the fact that this endowment was originally a general University endowment, it is of opinion that the bursaries ought not to be confined to Taranaki students, and that the executive committee be authorised to prepare statements for the Minister and if necessary approach him by means of a deputation. A favourable report from the committee was submitted to the Senate, recommending that the University be empowered to confer degrees in thology. A protest was made by a deputation of thc New Zealand Educational Institute against thc suggested w’ hdrawal of the privileges t present enjoyed by extramural students. The Pro-Chan-cellor promise 1 that full consideration would be given to the deputation’s request. The committee appointed to consider thc question of establishing chairs of agriculture at Canterbury Agricultural College recommended that thc Senate approve two chairs of agriculture and agricultural botany, with the further recommendation of Messrs R. K. Alexander and F. W. Hilgendorf as professors. The recommendations were adopted. A reply that careful consideration would be given to the requests was made to the deputation of the Secondary Schools’ Association which waited on the Senate with regard to the marking of matriculation papers.
