AUSTRALIANS’ TOUR
MATCH WITH LANCASHIRE VISITORS’ POOR SCORE AN INTERESTING POSITION LONDON, May 15. Owing to rain there was no play before lunch in the Lancashire v. Australia match. Hopwood completed the rout of the Australian batsmen after Kippax and Fairfax had made an attempt to stem the collapse. Kippax was undefeated aud Fairfax again illustrated his value as a defensive batsman. McDonald was slower to-day and the batsmen were very careful. Five successive maidens were bowled. However, with Fairfax’s dismissal, Hopwood soon got rid of the tailenders. Lancashire opened sensationally, Hallows going in the first over. Hornibrook, bowling with great effect into the wind, completely tied up the batsmen and after yorking Watson had two others caught. Five wickets, were down for seventy. Then Paynter and Eckersley became associated and carried the score past the century and were together when stumps were drawn, leaving the game in an interesting position. Scores: — Australia. RELYING ON GRIMMETT
IMPRESSION IN ENGLAND. LONDON, May 14. The Australian press says that each match gives a poorer impression of the Australian bowling, with the ‘exception of Grimmett. Critics are asking what is going to happen when the veteran is given an already overdue rest. Fairfax and Hornibrook so far are unable to maintain a good length, while A’Beckett and Hurwood do not look dangerous. The Australians amazing collapse is due purely to the great bowling of McDonald and Tyldesley.
