BOXING

BOUT FOR WANGANUI EXECUTIVE ’ S NEGOTIATIONS NOTHING LEFT UNDONE An impression appears to prevail that the Wanganui Boxing Association are not a live body, but if those who voice this opinion could only see the file of correspondence which has been piled up during the negotiations with the leading boxers in New Zealand, and even across the Tasman, there would certainly be a different tune.

Several months ago an effort was made to match Delaney with Glasson or Griffiths. this involving cablegrams to Sydney and telegrams to Dunedin and Wellington, while further correspondence passed between the Association and Johnny Leckie, who advised that he would not be available for a match till after Christmas. It was hoped that one of these bouts could be staged on Show night, Thursday, November 14, but all efforts were unavailing. Morgan and Trowcrn could not be matched owing to the former being nut available, and then the Association endeavoured to match Trowern with one of the available Australian welters, but again failure had to be reported. Thus it may be seen that the Wanganui Association did everything in their power to secure a professional bout worthy of being staged here, and they certainly cannot be blamed for the fact that illness and other causes prevented their ambitions from being realised. The amateurs, also, were not forgotte by the Association, who arranged two separate tournaments, both of which were advertised, but unfortunately sickness and accidents at the eleventh hour necessitated the abandonment of the tournaments.

At the present time negotiations are in train for a bout between two of the leading professionals in the Dominion, and telegrams have been despatched to Leckie, Grime, Sarron and Donovan, with the hope that success will finally crown the efforts of the committee, it being the intention to stage the bout at the Opera House on February 13, the night of the Wanganui Cup race. It is understood that Sarron has replied to the effect that he win not be available, it being his intention .to leave for the United States early in the New Year. Grime has indicated that he is prepared to fight at Wanganui but ho wants a straight-out guarantee instead of a purse, and in connection with this there will be a meeting of the executive in the very near future. No reply has as yet been received from Leckie, while it is expected that negotiations will be entered into with Donovan when a favourably reply has been received from Leckie. Further than the steps already taken by the executive of the Wanganui Boxing Association there is nothing of importance that could be done, unless it bo that some of those who are loud in their complaints should put their shoulders to the wheel and help the Association negotiate their vehicle over the rocky stretch of road which they have been travelling on during the past few months. CARNERA’S INTENTIONS WILL BECOME A FEENCHMAN Received Dee. 6, 11.5 p.m. PARIS, Due. 6. A sensation has been created by the announcement that Camera is to be-, come a naturalised Frenchman. He declares he is in perfect condition for his match against Stribling on Saturday*
