CRICKET

THE GAME IN WANGANUI CRITIC’S KEEN COMMENT ‘‘GHEATLY DISAPPOINTED’’ The opinion has more than once been expressed that there is a certain apathy in cricket circles in Wanganui, and for this reason the following comment from a correspondent signing himself “Onlooker” may prove of interest to readers as well as to cricket enthusiasts:— As a recent arrival and a keen supporter of the game 1 have been greatly disappointed in the lack of interest shown in cricket in this city. Ono wonders why, when elsewhere more enthusiasm is being evinced than ever before. Several members have approached me, personally, wishing to ascertain why this state of affairs exists. Firstly, I understand that only three clubs have held their annual meetings. Surely this alone shows a disgraceful lack of system. Unless club members are prepared to take some interest in the administration of the game and elect capable officers for the committees, they must expect exactly what they arc getting. Undoubtedly the secretary of the Wanganui Cricket Association is a hard and conscientious worker but without capable and willing support from his committee he has little or no chance of fulfilling his duties thoroughly. It would be rather amusing to outside associations should they learn exactly how the majority of these gcntclmen on the present conuAittee obtained office. I wonder if any of the clubs hold weekly or monthly meetings, to discuss matters appertaining to the organisation of the game in general. Should any resolutions be carried, are they passed on to their delegate on the Association committee, in order that they may possibly be put into operation? Surely the public would be interested to learn why no local players were nominated for the Town v. Country match held annually in Wellington. Are there no promising juniors who might be encouraged? Possibly the selectors arc too busy to give this point much consideration

Recently the Rangitikei Cricket Association published the names of twenty players, who had been chosen to practice, in view of the match to be played, against Wanganui on the 13th. of this month. Undoubtedly this practice is most beneficial to the players concerned and is recognised as such. It is a great pity that this system is not put into operation here. Much benefit would be derived and greater interest obtained on the part of the public. As it is, the match is less than a week off and apparently nothing has been done. Personally, it would not surprise me in the least if players and the press were not notified until the day of the match.
