THE WHEAT INQUIRY

POULTRY FARMERS’ VIEWS [Per Press Association.] * WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Further evidence was heard by the Special Committee of the House of Representatives considering the question of a sliding scale of wheat duties, Mr R. W. Hawke, United Member, for Kaiapoi, speaking as a poultry farmer and a grower of wheat, said he attended a conference of poultry keepers at Dunedin and the general opinion which was expressed there was that New Zealand should be selfdependent so far as the growing ut wheat was concerned. At no time was a resolution carried which aimed at putting the New Zealand grower out—of action. Although poultry farmers were naturally anxious to get their food supplies at as cheap a rate as possible, he disputed the assertion that the South Island poultry farmer had an advantage over the North Island farmer. The committee, at this stage, adjourned until next Tuesday.
