MR MACDONALD’S VISIT
jyjß MACDONALD’S visit to America is an occasion for congratulation for it marks a definite move in the direction of mutual understanding on the subject of limitation of naval armaments. The piling up of armaments definitely led to the last war. . It is reasonable to suppose that the limitation of the navies of the world will, at least, contribute to the continuance of peace. The Washington Naval Conference agreement resulted in an easing of the tension between Great Britain and America and that international tension is a terrible strain. When the Great War broke out Mr H. G. Wells writing in the New York Times expressed the relief which even the reality of war provided when he started his article with the pointed, truthful, and expressive sentence, “At last the intolerable strain is over.” At least neither America nor the British Empire are putting an intolerable strain upon the peace of the world by building big navies. Mr MacDonald’s visit is all to the good. There can be no gainsaying that.
