A MUSICAL TREAT

THE WANGANUI BANDS. VISIT PAID TO MARTON. During the week-end, the feast of music provided the people of Marton and district, on the culmination of the borough’s jubilee celebrations, was such that it will long be remembered. Wanganui is fortunate in having the champion pipe band and tho ex-cham-pion brass band of the Dominion in its midst, and the officials of the two organisations and the players themselves are not slow to give deserving institutions the benefit of their art, for such the presentations at Marton may be described. The audiences in tho country town were very appreciative, and though the bandsmen were unstinting in their response to demands, their hearers clamoured for more. A unique performance on Saturday afternoon in the park was the playing of the two Wanganui bands and the Palmerston North Pipe Band, together. To the Sassenach, who may despise tho national musical instrument, of Scotland, it may sound incredible that pipe and brass bands could render anything like music while playing together, but, thanks to the efforts of Captain Buckley, who arranged the music, and Pipe-Major Thomson, of Wanganui, whose assist- i apce he had, the result was very pleasing, and everyone who heard it was surprised to find that the effect could be made so good as it was. Pipe-Major Thomson also rendered a pipe solo, with brass band accompaniment, and this also was greatly enjoyed. Throughout Saturday evening all the bands kept up a lengthy programme, and their leading of the procession to the park for the crowning of the queen of the carnival, wag another treat.

On Sunday the Queen Alexandra Band attracted another large attendance at the park in tho afternoon and in the Town Hall in the evening. The playing on both occasions was of the highest standard, and fully revealed the talei ts of the soloists and the band generally. It was a strenuous week-end fof the bras H band but the players can rest assured rhat the people of Marton and district fully enjoyed every moment of their slay. On all sides can be heard warm comment of the action of th® Wanganui bandsmen, and their popular leaders, and their assistance in the jubilee campaign wilj be a pleasant and lasting memory.
