CITY S SOUTH ROAD
PROPOSAL TO WIDEN IT CITY ENGINEER'S VIEWS The Wanganui Automobile Association has had in view a proposal to urge I hat the main road approach to the < itv in the vicinity of Hotel Braeburn be* widened, and/before approaching the Highways Board on the subject, wrote to the city engineer (Mr J. Langton Deem), asking information as to what the City Council contemplated in this connection. At a meeting of the Association executive last night, the engineer replied stating that the matter had already been considered by him, but. no definite proposals had been .formulated mainly on account of the expensive nature of the work. “No doubt, any assistance that could be obtained from the -Main Highways Board iu this connection would go a long wav towards overcoming the difficulty,” Air Deem's letter continued. ‘‘At the samp lime it must be borne in mind that the Alain Highways Act, as at. present constituted, does not proI vide for subsidies being granted to ■ boroughs or cities having a population in excess of 6000 persons. There is every possibility of this council carrying out your suggestion and extending the principle to apply to the Town Bridge, and doubtless the assistance of your association would be welcome. ’ ’ A motion was passed to ask tin l City Council to go into the matter and sulsmit a report as to the probable cost, and what, proposals it had in mind, and that the association would accord the scheme its support in any action taken to interest the .Main Highways .Board.
