TAIHAPE i PUBLIC LIBRARY [ Special “Chronicle” Service ] The annual meeting of subscribers to j the Taihape Public Library was held h on Tuesday evening when Mr G. King, I |chairman of the library committee, pre- ( [sided over a poor attendance. • | The librarian (Mrs J. Smart) sub- • [milted the following report covering ■ the past year’s activities: — “On March 16 last I received a sub- • sidy of £4O from the Taihape Borough ; Council. I also received a letter from i the Town Clerk (Mr E. J. Price) stat- i ing that a resolution had been passed ■ |by the Council to the effect that the < reading room was to be moved upstairs. : This has been done and in my opinion ; is a complete failure. Half of the ’ papers in the present reading room can- ' not be placed in the racks because there p is not enough room, and some papers : that are in the racks cannot be read I as they are in the shadow of the light. I 1 would like permission to remove Mr ! Hird’s nam.e from the sign board on the Town Hall doors, and replace it with the name of the new chairman of '' the library committee (Air G. King). I i would also like a sign board to be plac- I ed at the foot of the Town Hall stairs, | indicating where the reading room is I situated. There are at present 57 subscribers

•to the library as against G2 last year. The credit balance this year is a I small one but 1 have been working on £lO less subsidy this year. In conclusion 1 wish Io thank the Town Clerk (Air E. J. Price) for auditing the library accounts.” When the above report was under discussion Air J. Smart said the present reading room was too small and totally unsuitable. It was essential that the reading public should be properly catered for. Air Loader replied that certain improvements to the reading room would be carried out by the Borough Council, and after further discussion during which members concurred with the views expressed by Air J. Smart, the matter was left in the hands of Air Loader, and the annual report was adopted, together with the balance (sheet, which disclosed a very small [credit balance. [ The chairman stated that the receipts [during the year had decreased to the intent of £26 on the previous year’s .figures and the expenditure had only I decreased by £S. I Mr Loader said the only way to make i.ne library a success was to procure : plenty of new books. | In view of the unsatisfactory position ■ it was decided to reduce the librarian’s [honorarium from £B4 per annum to £52 'l"‘r year. It was also resolved that I the position be reviewed at the next .annual meeting and if the year has •been a good one, the librarian will be ! granted a bonus. The election of offieers for the ensuing year resulted as [follows: —(’hairman, Mr ti. King; viceJ chairman, Mr E. ..oader; librarian. Airs J. .Smart; general committee, Alesdarnes I R. D. Wilson, E. J. Price, Messrs E. | Loader, J. .Smart, J. Williams, W. J. ]{. j McCormick, B. AL Kibblewhite, R. [Chamberlain and A. C. Joblin. ‘ It was resolved to give a quantity of [ohl books to the public hospital. Each [member of the committee was requesti' d to make every endeavour to secure |m w subscribers. The money saved bv reducing the librarian’s salary will be [expended on new books, and everything pvill be done to make the library* as attractive as possible. | The changing of the chairman’s name "» t.he sign board on the Hall . door, mentioned in the annual report, will be done when funds permit. | Town Hall (Taihape). 1 The P.D.C. 1929 special attraction at j i he Town Hall to-night and Friday is “lhe .Skyscraper” and features William Boyd with Alan Hale, Sue Carol I and Alberta Vaughan.
