BOARD OF TRADE
MARCH RETURNS DOWN (British Official Wireless.) BUG BY, April 12. Board of Trade returns show that the exports for March, were of the value of £58,623,000, being £6,334,000 less than in March, 1928. The imports were of the value of £98,593,000, or £11,923,000 less than in March, 1928. It may be pointed out, however, that Easter fell in March this year, whereas last year it fell in April, and this probably would account for a substantial lessening of trade. The exports for the first quarter of the year were the value of £181,167,000, showing a decrease of only £769,065, compared with the first three months of last year. Imports for the first quarter of this year amounted to £305,975,000, showing a decrease of £3,787,000 compared with the first quarter of 1928. The most encouraging feature presented by the returns for March is the increase in the value of the quantity of British coal exported. In value this exceeded half a million sterling. Imports for the month of March, compared with the same month last year, decreased by £11,924,000; exports decreased by £6,335,000; and re-ex-ports decreased by £1.281,000. The principal decreases were:—lmports: Grain and flour £2.900,000; non-duti-able food and drink, £959,000; wool, £4,248,000; hides and skins £1,114 k 000.
