PHYSICAL CULTURE
DISPLAY BY Y.M.C.A. A display of physical culture was given at St. Paul’s Hall on Saturday evening by members of the Y\M.C.A., under the direction of Mr Manly to whom a great deal of credit is due for an excellent performance. The various items were announced by the secretary, Mr Milligan. A demonstration of marching, swinging to a double high step, goose step and other vigorous exercises, was following by feats on the pajaUel bar by the juniors and physical drill by the seniors. Club-swinging by the ladies was Specially good. Not the least interest were the games of the younger lads. These were all team work, and inc'udcd 'wheel-barrow race, and hoop bowling. Specially good were the performances on the horizontal bar, many new and difficult feats being performed!. Junior boys were well to the fore in tumbling and turning cart-whce's, etc., some of the feats requiring no little nerve. Perhaps the daintiest performance of the evening was a ballet dance by six young ladies; the steps were nicely executed and the correct tempo was maintained. An exhibition of tableaux given by three men was excellent. Mr Manly (the instructor) gave a so’o exhibition of music dancing, gymnastic fca£s and weight-lift-ing. There was no wait between times two dummy clowns keeping the audience in laughter with their nonsense and athletic feats of skill and nerve. During the evening the Y.M.C.A. I'Orchestra, under the direction of Mr W. Bowra, supplied incidental music suitable to the occasion.
