NOTHING SINISTER

SOLICITORS’ GUARANTEE BILL I Speciar ‘‘Chronicle” Service ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. “It is an extraordinary thing that Parliament should think that there was something sinister behind the Law Practitioners ’ Guarantee Bill,” said a leading member of the profession to-day. “It is inconceivable that any other profession in this country or outside it should make an offer voluntarily to tax its members for the public good, and yet have that offer viewed with suspicion. The plan was approved by practically the w r hole of the profession, and was sound enough. What the result will be it is impossible to say, but the Council of the New Zealand Law will- abandon any further attempt to get the Act passed. The public Society has not yet considered its course of action it is possible that it will be the sufferers, for the payment to them for the 'default of any solicitors would be really ex gratia.’’
