SOUND FILMS
FUTURE BRITISH PICTURES. Even in the new field of talking pictures, Britain will go into competition with America, British Acoustic Films, Ltd., a company allied to Gaumont, has perfected a sound device which will be used i» the filming of a current London stage success. It is also possible lhat in the near future the Gaumont Graphic will also be available with sound accompaniments. The cost of installing reproducers in theatres will be £5OO each. Meanwhile reports from New York indicate that trouble is already arising over the censorship of talking pictures, and at latest, a test case has been instituted by Edna Ferber, author of “Show Boat.” This was produced on Broadway by Ziegfeld as a lavish musical comedy. Miss Ferber sold the book rights to Universal, who are said to have signed Zita Johann as film-lead because of her voice. Now Miss Ferber is protesting against the use of Jerome Kearn’s music on the grounds that Universal bought story rights only.
