BRITAIN’S EXPORTS STILL EXPANDING

ENCOURAGING FIGURES ( By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright ] [ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY', Sept. 12. The figures for August show that British exports have again increased for the fifth year in succession. They amounted in value to £62,217,000, showing an increase of £1,331,000 over those of July, and of £2,806,000 over those of August last year. The figures are remarkable, in view of the fact that the unemployment statistics show an increase. During the eight months of this year the exports have shown an increase of £20,461,000, compared with the same period in 1927. The imports during August amounted in value to £97,700,000, showing on increase of £2,232,000, compared with the July returns, and of £7,584,000 compared with those of last August. For the eight months of this year the imports show an increase of £2,253,000, compared with the corresponding period of last year. . EMPIRE TRADING AND IMMIGRATION SELLING PROPAGANDA [ Australian Press Assn. 1 VANCOUVER, Sept. 13. At the joint conference of the Board of Trade and Empire Parliamentarians to-dav, the Hon. W. A. Nosworthy (N.Z.‘) said: ‘We should get down to fundamentals and consider not only immigration within the Empire, but how all the interests of the Empire might be consolidated.’’ Mr David Kirkwood (Scottish Labour member) caused amusement when he declared that what Canada required was a Socialist Republic. Mr Hudson (Labour M.P. for Huddersfield) said that Britain wanted to st 11 British goods in order to buy Canadian goods. Mr Herbert Williams could not see why Canada was unable to absorb more than 20 per cent of the British migrants she did before the war. He pointed out that Britain through the Empire Marketing Board, was building propaganda f /r Empire goods in Britain and urged Canada to do the same.
