MAIN HIGHWAYS

WORK OF THE BOARD CONSTRUCTION ON BUSY , THOROUGHFARES 1 Per Press Association. J WELLINGTON, June 25. At the monthlly meeting of the Main Highways Board on May 21 ani 22, one of the most important matters dealt with was the question of the construction, of high-class ; vements adjacent to the larger centres of pjpulation on the introduction of the petrol tax. It was indicated that approximately 25 per cent, of the amount collected would bo utilised for the payment of a preferential subsidy to counties for the purpose of construction of higkclass pavements on heavily trafficked roads adjacent to the larger ccntr-s of population. The cost of construction of such high-class roads was falling very heavily on some of the rural districts and the Board in cases of this kind now pays subsidies up to £3 for £l.

Several tentative schemes were approved by the Board and those, in accordance with previous announcement*, are now being submitted to the district highways councils and automobile associations concerned in each case for consideration. Schedules, which have been drawn up, cover periods ranging from four to seven years, based on the estimated amount which will be available from the petrol tax.
