SOCCER

WANCANUt GAMES

K.F.’S IN THE LEAD ’SHOPS DRAW WITH THISTLE The competition for the Wanganui Football Association Cup was advanced a further stage on Saturday in ideal football weather. K.P.’s take the lead in the competition as a result of their win over Eastbrooke on Cook’s Gardens, while ’Shops shared the points with Thistle on Victoria Park. K.P.’S AND EASTBROOKE Eastbrookc started with the sun against them and were soon round Martin but Brown sent them back. A good cross from Bolton was saved by Martin and then Gillon had a good try but missed narrowly. K.P.’s took up the offensive and were soon in the lead, Hope going through to beat Barker from close range. From the restart ’Brooke had the best of matters for a spell but were never really dangerous, although Bolton put one or two nice crosses from the wing. K.P.’s Again Proudfoot had been defending well and eventually let his forwards away and from a well-placed corner Phillips put another one past Barker. Eastbrooke defence got a bit rattled at this stage and Fairclough nearly got another. A great chance came the way of Phillips but the red centre missed an open goal. Dick was proving a good substitute for Jamieson at centre half and let his forwards away repeatedly. Gilroy had a good shot stopped by Barker. ’Brooke then had a spell attacking and Thomson missed a golden opportunity when he over-ran the ball. A free |to Eastbrooke in a good position brought nothing, Webster placing badly. Bolton came into prominence at this with a few runs along the line but nothing came of them, Proudfoot always having the measure of the outside man. A good run by Gilroy put the reds on the offensive again but McKie sent them back. The blues (Eastbrooke) had the better of the play right up to the interval but could not get near Martin, Proudfoot and Neilson defending well, and the first spell saw the scores: K.P.’s 2; Eastbrookc 0.

On the resumption Eastbrooke attacked and forced a corner which was cleared. Fyfo also had a shot from far out but missed. Getting along to the other end Phillips was right on the mark, Barker saving somewhat luckily. A good cross from Fairclough was caught up by Hope but Barker saved the latter’s shot in fine style. Shortly after the goalie had to stop another hot one from Gilroy.

Eastbrooke then had more of the play but were very weak in front of goal. A free taken by Webster failed to materialise. Sterling defensive work by Proudfoot kept the blues out and K.P.’s took up the role of aggressors Jamieson crossed a nice ball but Phillips missed another open goal. Fairclough showed up with some heady play but Barker was ready for everything that came his way. The blues next made a scamper towards K.P. ’s goal. Bolton gave Fyfe a nice pass and the latter shot well on the mark only to see Martin bring off a marvellous save. A Doubtful Score A free for “hands” against Brown was cleared by Neilson and the red forwards got away on the move and Fairclough put another one past Barker. The scorer appeared to he a good couple of yards offside when he received the ball. The blues were a well-beaten team now but kept hammering away. Webster raised enthusiasm with a fine solo run but lost possession when getting near Martin. Killeen then had a great chance to score but missed badly. This was the blues’ last effort, and the only other incident of note in the game was a good shot by Hope which was well saved by Barker. THISTLE AND WORKSHOPS The Thistle-W’orkshops game was played on Victoria Park and resulted in a draw. Thistle had the better of the exchanges in the first half, crossing over with a lead of two goals scored by Gilbert and Falconer. Richards missed a penalty for ’Shops. The second spell saw the ’Shops in a better light and shortly after the start they got a score when Land sent the ball into his own net. Their second goal was the result of a nice bit of combined play by the whole forward line, Reilly being the one to finish the movement off by beating Walker. WITH THE JUNIORS Thistle juniors were too good for Wanganui East, winning by three goals. The game on Cook’s Gardens produced some good football on both sides Workshops held tho lead at half-time and in practically the whole of the second half, but Mills never gave up. A great rally in the last three minutes saw Mills score twice to equalise. They nearly got the lead with the last kick of the game.
