TOO IMPATIENT
RUGBY ENTHUSIASTS TELEPHONE OPERATORS OVERWHELMED. Interest in the All Blacks’ progress in South Africa is increasing with every match played, and yesterday morning the Wanganui Telephone Exchange was besieged with inquiries as to the result of the third encounter in the land of the Springbok. The lino operated by dialling 8 will take many inquiries at one time but frequently the engaged sign was heard on it yesterday, and the work of the exchange was seriously interfered with by subscribers who, finding the proper All Black number engaged, proceeded to call up “information,” “complaints,” “toll,” “rural” and any other departmental number that came to the mind..
As the setting aside of a special line to handle football inquiries is an additional service provided as an act of courtesy, and the inquiries have to be dealt with by only the normal staff, in future number 8 will be the only lino on which All Black information will be given. Those who find the number engaged will have to wait and dial again or do without the news they seek.
