CYCLING

ON THE ROADS WITH THE AMATEUB BIDEBS. LAST SATURDAY’S EVENT. (By “Pedal.”) The road race last Saturday was quite a good one despite the conditions which were against good times being recorded. Dustin, th' winner, has ridden consistently and has at last succeeded in annexing the honours in a road race. Whalley nearly managed the hat trick and but for Dustin would have done so. As it was he landed fastest tim'd. Gurr was second in time and his performance was, if anything, better than Whalley’s, as he had a break of 2min. 15sec. to catch, whereas Whalley had a fair 40scc. in front of him and had the advantage of moving through the field. Again Whalley caught a fast-moving bunch about four miles from home and had a good breather for the rest of the way, while Gurr rode the fifteen miles on his own. The writer, while not wishing to detract from Whalley’s ride, desires to ’emphasise the conditions under which a scratch man has to ride. Reg. Springer put in some good work and shows that Le is going the right way to score a win. Wall again secured a minor place. “Podge” should very shortly “startle the natives” as he was riding in great form last week. All will wish him luck. Mel. Galbraith rode well for his first start and but for falling at the bottom of the pig farm hill would have secured a placing. Better luck next time! To-morrow’s race will be a threemile event tc be held on the racecourse at 2.45 p.m. Riders will need to pay to enter the ground and entrance for the race will be free. For the Future. The follo'wing tentative programme has been drawn up for the next few weeks:— June 16.—20 miles. (The course for this race is as follows: Straight along the main road to the store, around the Kai Iwr*Roa.d—Pig Farm couise to the Westmere Church, across the main road and around the Blueskin course the reverse way and down the main road to the Kai Iwi Road. This double block will be traversed twice and the Kai Iwi-Pig Farm course will be covered three times. On reaching the Westmere Church for the third time riders will turn to the right down the main road to the finishing post at Victoria Park. The first trophy will be a set of tyres kindly donated by Mr J. E. Harper. June 30.—25 miles. July 14.- —30 miles. July 28.—30 miles.
