Of great interest to New Zealanders was the result of the Derby, which was run on the historic Epsom course on Wednesday. The third horse, Black Watch, is a son of the Australian-bred mare Punka, who won the Marton Cup and the Woodville Cup in the 1920-21 season. He was bred by Mr J. B. Reid, the former owner of the Elderslie Stud. The breeding of the winner will also be interesting to New Zealanders, for Felstead is a son of the 1920 Derby winner,. Spion. Kop,. whose sire, Spearmint, was a son of the mighty Carbine. [ Australian Press Assn.—United Service ] LONDON, June 6. All the roads and railways leading to Epsom, were packed with a neverending stream of traffic this morning for the Derby, which has been run there every year since 1780, except during the war years. The event continues annually to attract even greater crowds, although those remaining away and who listenin to the wireless description have a better idea of the progress of the race and know the result earlier than the majority of those attending the course. After a long, rainless spell the course was rather hard. The weather

was fine and there was a record attendance including the Royal Family. The principal event resulted in a “turn up” as follows: The Derby Stakes. A sweepstakes of £lOO each with £3OOO added; for three-year-old entire colts and fillies; about 1| miles. FELSTEAD (Sir Hugo CunliffeOwcn) b.c. by Spion Kop — Felkington 9.0, S. Wragge .. 1 FLAMINGO (Sir Laurence Philipps), b.c. by Flamboyant— Lady Peregrine, 9-0 2 BLACK WATCH (Mr L. Neumann) by Black Gauntlet—Punka 111.. 9.0 ' 3 The other starters were Fairway, Sunny// Trace, Gang Warily, Ranjit Singh, Royal Alinstrcl, Bubbles 11., Canielford, Fcrnkloof, Palais, Royal Roue, Porthole, Advocate, Constant Sou, Grange View, Royal Crusader, Scintillation and Yeomanstown. After three false starts Flamingo got the best of the break. Felstead took the lead at Tattenham Corner and from there on he was not challenged, winning easily by a length and ahalf. Black Watch was six lengths away. The time was 2.34 2-5 —equalled Call Boy’s record. The favourite. Fairway, was never prominent. Sunny Trace was well placed at Tattenham Corner, but failed to stay on. The terrific pace over the first six furlongs killed the popular fancies and ensured Felstcad’s easy vistory, the winner almost cantering home. He

was eight lengths behind Sunny Trace and Flamingo descending the hill before reaching Tattenham Corner, but completely conquered Flamingo a quarter of a mile from home. The rider of the winner, Wragge, says that Felstead was third at Tattenham Corner, and going easily when Sunny Trace and Flamingo were tiring. He knew then that he was going to win and sat still. The horse did the rest. NAPIER PARK MEETING HANDICAPS FOR NEXT WEEK ( Per Press Assoc’ation. 1 WELLINGTON June 7. MOTEO HACK HURDLES. (Of 150 sovs; 1 Smiles.)

NOTES AND COMMENTS Nominations for the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meeting, and also the winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, will close at 8 o’clock to-night-Just So’s Sire. An interesting feature of the breeding of Just So, who is a half-brother by Chief Ruler to Mireusonta and Kiosk, is that Absurd, the sire of Mireusonta, is a brother to the dam of Chief Ruler. Beau Cavalier’s Win. By common consent, writes “Vedette,” it was agreed that the Great Northern. Hurdle Race field on Saturday at Ellerslie was one of the weakest for some years. Beau Cavalier’s victory, of course, was received with tumultuous applause, following on his three very notable steeplechase successes last year. S. Henderson received an ovation as he came back to scale. In reality it was a poor race, for 50 per cent, of the field fell, and only Mia Bella an.d Mister Gamp hart l any chance with the winner at any stage. At the same time one should not detract from, the Auckland gelding’s performance, for the time, 4min 52sec, was the Lest since Bon Rove won in 4min 51sec in 1918.
