CALIFORNIA’S MAIDEN VOYAGE. According to information received from the International Mercantile Marine Company, the new Panama Pacific liner California, the biggest ship ever built in America,. arrived at Havana from New York on January 31, two hours ahead of schedule. Representatives of the company and the builders on board, who had been watching hir performance on the first stage of her maiden voyage to San Francisco, expressed great satisfaction at the liner’s behaviour. On the first day out she encountered heavy gales and rough seas, but in spite of this she showed remarkable steadiness, which delighted her large passenger compliment. DUTCH-BUILT LINER. Of the large number of outstanding features associated with the Netherland S.S. Co.’s new motor-liner Christiaan Huygens, not the least interesting is that this vessel is the biggest ship hitherto constructed in Holland. She has a displacement of 21,700 tons, and is fitted with twin-screw Sulzer two-stroke single-acting engines having a total output of 11,600 b.h.p. aj 115 r.p.m. These motors are the first ten-cylinder Sulzer units installed in a ship; turbo-scayenger-ing is employed and the blowers are electrically driven. Moreover, five-cylinder auxiliary Diesel generators are fitted, while the manoeuvring-air compressor is also driven by ' a Diesel engine. SUBMARINE MOTOR SHIP. A submarine motor ship for thn Danish Navy is under construction at the Royal Danish Dockyard, Copenhagen. It has a displacement of 493 tons being 154 ft in length, the beam 26.9 ft and mean draught 7.9 ft. The crew numbers 38 men, and besides carrying 40 tons of fuel oil and three tons of lubricating oil the vessel has a capacity for nine tons of fresh water, eigLjt of previsions and 20 tons made up of sphres for air reservoirs and war stores. The vessel is fitted out as a workshop and charging station for submarines and has a submarine signalling apparatus with a receiver and transformer mounted in the wireless compartment. There are two minelayers to port and starboard respectively; and a cutter in the stem as a protection against niineti. Finally. there is a mine-sweeping installation. Two 450 b.h.p. Burmeister and Waintype engines, built under license at the Royal Dockyard, are installed ; they are similar to the design utilised in Danish submarines. On deck the windlass and warping winch arc coupled to 15 h.p. motors, while the auxiliary machinery in the engine-room is electrically driven. Munition stores are arranged in the ’tween deck forward and aft. Three boats are carried, one of them being fitted with a motor. INTERCOLONIAL SERVICE.
