TAIHAPE

BOROUGH AFFAIRS [ Special "Caronlcle- Service. I The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Friday evening. The Deputy-Mayer (Mr .1. P. Aldridge) presided and there were also present: Councilors W. H. Maclean, E. Loader, L. B. H. de Lautour, F. Read and J. | Quirk. i A letter was received from the Com- ' inissioner of Police stating that after j inquiring into the position, he could I not, at present, provide an extra con- | stable for Taihape. | The District Highway Council for- ! warded an extract from the New Zealand Gazette declaring the TaihapeMataroa road from the Gretna Hotel to the Mataroa railway station a main highway. The Wanganui Hospital Board wrote enclosing payments for the year ending March 31, 1928, and maintenance and capital estimates for the year ending March 31, 1929. ; The Board also forwarded a state- ! meat showing the rateable capital value •of contributing authorities in the | Board’s district, and the amount of | maintenance and capital levy payable :by each authority. The amount due by I the Taihape Borough Council is as follows:—Maintenance £462 12s, capital The town clerk: The levy has been raised about £47 from last year. Cr. Maclean: I think we should protest. At present there is no control over the expenditure of hospital boards, which in many cases have been accused of extravagance. Cr. Aldridge: A lot of money has been spent, but the board is doing its level best to curtail the expenditure. Probably our institution’s expenditure compares very favourably with others in New Zealand. Cr. Mac•ean then moved the following resoluliou: “In the opinion of this Council •he Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act should be amended in the direction of limiting the right of hospital boards to tax the community without control, by making the board’s right to tax the local bodies limited in the same manner as this local body, in respect of general rates.” The motion was seconded by Cr. de Lautour and I tarried. 'lhe Works Committee recommended: »a) That the sum of £2,400 be placed on the estimates for work during the financial year ending March 31, ISZD. fhe chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. Loader) said that the greater portion of the money would be spent on the streets ami roads in the suburbs, t bj That the sum of £2O 10s be expended on repairs at the Fire Station. Both recommendations were adopted. The following stock was killed at the ablatoirs during the month: 48 cows, 54 bullocks. 7 calves, 334 sheep, 58 lambs, 67 pigs. The electrical engineer (Mr H. G. Knight) was authorised to attend the Electric Supply Engineers’ Conference at Wellington on June 19. The following recommendations by the Oval Domain Committee were adopted: 1. That the Electric Light Committee erect two flood lights to light up No. 1 ground for football training purposes; also lights in dressing room and lavatory under grandstand, the Rugby Union to pay for current consumed and replace all breakages. 2. That the Electric Light Committee. erect a street light inside at the top of the grandstand. 3. That an estimate of the cost of erecting wire netting on top of the present fence around the enclosure, in front of the grandstand, be obtained. The recommendation of the Finance Committee that owing to the weak state of the District Fund account the matter of depositing £3OO with the commissioners, for replacement of the electric light plant, stand over for the time being, wa s not adopted. Mr Macloan said the recommendation was out of order as the Council had passed a resolution in favour of depositing the £3OO wilh commissioners for the purpose mentioned, and the Council was bound by law to do so. '1 he Council adopted the recommendations of the Finance Committee that: (1) Temporary repairs be made in the

Town Hall supper room to meet present requirements; (2) that the Town Clerk be instructed to proceed by special order in making a by-law to prevent the contamination of food during manufacture and sale, as authorised by the Health Department; (3) that indication boards be erected at convenient places in the streets showing direction to the Ladies’ Rest Room; (4) that the estimates of receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1929, as submitted be approved. EUCHRE PARTIES The weekly euchre party under the auspices of the Anglican Church was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs Redden (13 games) and the men’s trophy was secured by Mr Smith. Consolation trophies were awarded to Mrs Bernie and Mr Burrell. Messrs Eaton and Henrichs were in charge of the card room, w’hile Mesdaines Barrowman and Blocklcy supervised the supper arrangements. At the weekly euchre party at Ohotu the ladies’ prize was won by Mrs Arms while Mr A. Clinton (senr.) carried off the men’s trophy. Consolation prizes were given to Miss Thurston and Mr Hardy. There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre party at Utiku and competition was very keen. Mrs Pragncll and Miss Tall tied for the ladies’ prize and in the play off the former was successful. The men’s trophy was won by Mr A. Thorn. Consolation prizes were presented to Mrs Kite and Mr R. Potaka. PERSONAL Mr F. H. Fitchett, registrar of electors, was in Taihape on Saturday. KING’S THEATRE PICTURES Tim McCoy appears at the King’s to-night taking the name-part in “The Frontiersman.” As Captain Dale, officer, trusted escort, and scout of the Tennessee State Militia, his work reveals his personal experience of Indians, horses and active frontier life in a manner that is at once natural and charming. There is nothing forced or unfeasible, nothing “impossible” or even tiresome, but a straight-forward sweep of the enthralling story, from a quaint old southern home to the trackless plains.
