AMBITIOUS CLUBMEN

SWANKERS’ PUBLIC APPEAL CROWDS RESPOND TO GOOD EFFECT Yesterday and last night provided the period of the annual appeal for funds by the Swankers’ Club, and street collections, in which great assistance was given by women and gi-l helpers, were a satisfactory medium. Ambitious attractions at the Chavannes Hotel building were the chief sources of revenue, and sweets, fancy, vegetable, and flower stalls were attractively placed around the decorated interior. Amusement parlours were extremely popular among the hundreds who crowded the corridors and several competitioffs were featured. Notable assistance was given by the Wanganui Garrison Band, under Conductor T. Gray, and the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band. A “stunt” feature—the leap by a local business man from Drew’s building to Chavannes Hotel—brought the hundreds in Victoria Avenue into a high humour and there was a liberal response to the collection afterwards. Despite the obvious impossibility of the feat, there were many who halfbelievcd in the ruse and gazed agog at a plank projecting into space. Ample publicity and an original idea brought into amusing effect had a gratifying result for the ambitious clubmen in their endeavours to augment assistance funds. Complete results of the campaign were not available last night, but it is understood citizens supplied a sum in the vicinity of £350.
