WINTER RACING

WANGANUI MEETING OPENS

Mild Surprises Furnished in Most of First Day Events

BY “KESTRAL”

Some flue jumping was witnessed yesterday in both the Wanganui Steeplechase and the May Hurdles, which events were a feature of the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter fixture. Brigadier Bill won the big Steeples in taking style for the Hunterville sportsman, Mr J. Bull, the southerner Tuki, being second and Passin’ Through third. Mount Marta s victory in the May Hurdles came in the nature of a mild surprise, while Horomea, who won the Connolly Handicap, paid a double-figure dividend. The fixture will be concluded to-morrow, the Grandstand Steeplechase being the cross country attraction.

With heavy rain failing for most of Wednesday night the outlook did not look too bright yesterday morning as far as the weather was concerned. But the Wanganui Club’s luck held good md the sky, overcast early in the day, Jieared later on and the sun shone out. nild conditions prevailing for the rest >f the afternoon.

The ground was.jather heavy under foot and the track rather bolding. y« i it was not soaked and did not cut up much with the racing and the large fields. b b The attendance appeared to be above the average for a winter meeting, yet speculation on the totalisator was a I trifle below that f last year’s opening ■ day. the sum of £22.362 being put s through by the staff. This was £1023 j 10s less than the amount handled on the I corresponding .lay in 1927, when the! machine registered £23.325 J Os. During the day a pleasing programme of music was supplied by the Queen Alexandra Band and was much appreciated. The management of the meeting was of the usual Wanganui standard, with Messrs W. Hall and D. Robbins at the head of the clerical staff that is so essential for the conduct of race natherings. Backers of the favourite had a sorry day, only one of the public’s choice paying a dividend. This was Lady’s Boy, who finished second in the opening event. Brigadier Bill won his second steeplechase for Mr Bull, for last week he was successful in the Egmont Steeples, and if he goes on improving he may secure still more of the cross-country events this season. The other places were filled by Tuki and Passin’ Through, while the top-weight, Comical, finished on well just behind the trio’ The favourite was. unfortunately, jearlv out of the contest. The second “leg’’ of the jumping double was won by Mount Marta, who won nicely from the Hawera-trained Troilus, with Matu in the minor position. The principal handicap event on the flat was secured by Horomea, while the open sprint went to the Taranaki-own-ed but Hawera-trained Silvermine. Desert Lad’s Good PriceSix defections from the Purua Mack saw seventeen face the starter. The public declared for Lady ’s Boy (£592/ and Callanmore (£530), there beino a big drop to Fee Simple (£298) and Desert Lad (£202). Iney got away to a good start, Eka and the favourite being first to show uut, with Callanmore and Chelone also there. Alter they had run a furlong, Eka was foi lowed by Chelone, Lauy s Boy, Callan 1 more, Desert Lad, lee Simple and White Ringlet. Crossing tue top, Lady’s Boy and Eka were in the lead from Fee Simple, Desert Lad, Callanmore and Chelone, and this was practically the order into the straight. Desert Lad and Lady ’s Boy fougut out the issue in the run home and the former prevailed by half a length, with Fee Simple two lengths back. Then followed Callanmore, Avro, Bright Comet and Cold Air. The winner paid a good price. A ’Chaser from the “Bay" Nothing but San Fora was wanted for the Hack Steeplechase, and the Eeramorz gelding was entrusted wit a £727, Mixed Heather (£432) and Ruby R*ng (£430) being next best backed. A aninnia was slow to move when they were let go and running for the first fence Royal Heather was in the lead into this obstacle, a brush, but into the back stretch Radiate was the pilot, being followed by Royal Heather, Risk and Ruby Ring. Risk crashed at the brush by the live furlong post, where Vaninnia was already toiling in the rear. Passing the stands Mixed Heather was just in front of Radiate, wdth San Fera, Son o’ Mine Ruby Ring and Royal Heather following closely. Radiate and Mixed Heather were the leaders down the back, and into the straight the last time the former was well in front of Mixed Heath- [ er but crashed at the hencoop, leaving Mixed Heather to run home an easy winner by ten lengths from Ruby Ring, who beat Son o’ Mine by three lengths for second place. Sun Fera was fourth and Royal Heather the only other horse to finish, Vaninnia having refused at the penultimate obstacle. It looked a good thing for Radiate when he fell. The Brigadier’s Easy Win. Ail seven acceptors lined up for the Wanganui Steeplechase and in a very even betting market Maunga (£616) was preferred to Brigadier Bill (£532), but they were all well supported, the outsider being Comical (£2>s). Racing to the first obstacle Peter Maxv.ell was just in front of Comical, but ’Frisco Jack and Brigadier Bill were close up and Maunga last. Comical then went to the front to run down the back in front of Peter Maxwell, ’Frisco Jack and Brigadier Bill, and he piloted the field over the double in front, of the stands, ’Frisco Jack. Peter Maxwell, Brigadier Bill. Tuki. Maunga and Passin’ Through following in that order. The favourite wa s pulled up at x the five furlongs pOM, the leader at this

stage being Brigadier Bill, with Comical next and Peter Maxwell right up. The second time past the stands Brigadier Bill was well clear from Comical, Passin’ Through and Peter Maxwell (together) and Tuki. with ’Frisco Jack well out of it. Brigadier Bill’s lead five furlongs from home was three lengths, Passin’ Through and Peter Maxwell having headed Comical. Brigadier Bill was eight lengths in front as they came to the last fence, and over the final stages he went on with it to win by a dozen lengths from Tuki, with Passin’ Through two lengths away, and Comical a similar distance back. Peter Maxwell was next and ’Frisco Jack just turning into the straight as the winner pulled, up. Peshwa’s Hack Hurdles Mister Gamp was a warm order for the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, carrying £945, there being a big drop to Wenday (£469) and Polyphemus (£316). The early leaders were Shining Armour and Mister Gamp but the leader at the top was Modern, with Our Jack and Shining Armour next, and Glengariff, Wenday, Polyphemus and Peshwa following. The favourite fell at the second fence and Our Jack led the field up the straight the first time, being well ahead of Peshwa and Wenday. As they turned into the back stretch Our Jack and Peshwa were four lengths ahead of Wenday and Polyphemus, next being Modern, with a big gap to Glengariff. Shining Armour threw out five and a-half furlongs from home, and crossing the top Our Jack and Peshwa were well clear of Polyphemus and Wenday. Peshwa was too good for the others in the run to the judge and won by a length and a-half, Polyphemus finishing on to beat Wendav by a length. Modern, and Our Jack were well ahead of Blago and Lady Passenger. Mount Marta’s May Hurdles Pcneus appealed most to backers in the May Hurdles, carrying £722, Pouri (£571) and Vexatious (£326) being next in favour. Ned Kelly went out to make the pace from Pouri and Peneus, the order into the straight the first time being Ned Kelly, Peneus, Matu, Pouri. Troilus and Mount Marta. Peneus and Ned Kelly ran into the back stretch together, being followed by Matu, Troilus and Mount Marta, but at the four furlongs Troilus had assumed command from Peneus, Ned Kelly, Matu and Mount Marta, crossing the top three lengths ahead of Mount Marta and Matu. Coming to the last fence Mount Marta was closing up on the leader, and once over the Mountain Knight gelding asserted himself to pass the post a comfortable winner by two lengths. A length and ahalf away was Matu, and next to finish were Pouri, Perle de Leon, Peneus, Braeman, Vexatious and Ned Kelly. A Double-Figure Dividend When backers got to work on the Connolly Handicap they went hot and strong for Vesperus, who had £949, against his number, and there was a big drop to Blimp (£441), Royal Damon (£424) and Ring Boy (£412). The result was a surprise for backers as Horomea (£194) hopped out in the lead and was never headed. They got away to a good start, Beaumont, Black Mint, Blimp and Horomea racing for the lead on the turn for Horomea to take command and lead past the stands from Blimp, Black Mint, Royal Damon, Beaumont, Glenross, Kawhakina, Ring Boy and Vesperus, Royal Mint and Nukumai being last. The order as far as the leaders were concerned, was little changed as they turned into the back stretch but at the four furlongs Glenross had run into third place behind Horomea and Blimp, the others in order being Royal Damon, Vesperus, Black Mint and Beaumont. Holding her* own across the top Horomea turned for home clear of Blimp and Glenross, with Kawhakina and Royal Damon next. Blimp made an effort to reach Horomea in the run to the judge but failed by a neck, Royal Damon following in third place at an interval of three lengths. A similar distance back came Beaumont, and Glenross was fifth, being followed by Vesperus, Black Mint and Kawhakina. Silvermine’s Sprint There was only £7 between Covent Garden (£534) and Limited (£527) in the Borough Handicap, with Tea Time (£485) nearly £lOO better backed than First Acre. It proved an easy thing for Silvermine, who was first to break the line, being followed by Tea Time, Limited, Partaga, Covent Garden and Day Guard, and when they had gone two furlongs the order was Sil vermine, Tea Time, Covent Garden, Limited and Partaga. Crossing the top Silvermine was out clear from Tea Time nd Covent Gorden, with Limited close up, and they turned for home in this order. Over the final stages Silvermine held his own to reach the, judge a length and a-half ahead of Tea Time, who was •» length in front of Benzora, Limited being a head away. Next to pass the post were Partaga, Bonogne, First Acre and Miss Pat.
