He won by a head and instantly crashed into a fence and broke his neck. The jockey is still unconscious. He was placed on the scales, declared the winner, and then taken to hospital. Amongst the spectators at the autumn meeting of the- Canterbury Jockey Club was the one -time jockey, M. Allan, who, 48 years ago, piloted La.dy Emma to victory in the Great Autumn Handicap, when she carried the lowest weight (5-12) that has ever been carried on the back of a victor. Allan is a member of an old Dunedin family who were closely associated with racing in the early days in Otago. Elthein a '‘Headache”

About the biggest headache on pony tracks is the ex-New Zealand mare Elthein (says a Sydney paper). Since she packed up-her port and sailed across the Tasman, the daughter of Elysian has been a constant, annoyance both to her owner and the puting public. Yes!

she did win one race on A.R.C. tracks, but a sequence of defeats since that lone victory has torn the innards out of her owner’s roll, and punters should now wake up to the fact that she is but an ordinary equine. She was backed for a fortune in the second heat of the V.P. Handicap and after being first to turn into the straight, missed a place. Elthein, it may be remembered, was once trained at Wanganui by W. H. Dwyer. A Capable Apprentice.

The capable youug apprentice jockey, O. Mclnally, attached to M. J. Carroll’s training establishment at Franklin, had to miss several engagements at the Easter meetings through being confined to the Waikato Hospital. While riding Wco Marble at the Whangarei meeting, Mclnally’s mount got in too close to the rails, with the result that the rider’s loft foot was rather badly crushed. He is making good recovery and anticipates being about and following his calling in a very short time. Mclnally has steered twelve winners this season.
