NEW ZEALANDER’S FALL

SENTENCE OF SIX MONTHS Alfred Douglas Glass (25), shop assistant, of Nevern Square, Earl’s Court, pleaded guilty to stealing a number of articles belonging to his employer, John Barker and Co., High Street, Kensington. Air Alorley, who prosecuted, stated that the accusal had been in the employment of Barker’s since June and was receiving a weekly salary of £3 10s as an assistant in the boys’ outfitting department; be said that for some time by a fraudulent, use of the credit note system at the store the defendant had been getting goods out of the place for his own use and on some occasions had packed up parcels and taken them out himself. Air Gilmour Robinson, counsel for the defend-ant, urged on his behalf that at an early age, Glass, who w’as born in New Zealand, was left friendless in the world to fend for himself. He managed to save some money and came to England with the idea of entering on a literary career. In the end he found he co-uld not, make headway in that direction, anrl he was obliged to take a position at Barker ’s store. Later he came under the influence of a woman older than himself and it was then that he foolishly fell into temptation to rob his employers. Air Alarshall observed that it was a bad case and sentenced defendart to six months’ imprisonment.
