LIVER EXTRACT
HOPE TO ANAEMIC SUFFERERS LONDON, March 20. Commending thc use of liver extract for pernicious anaemia, thc Medical Research Council expresses the opinion that progress in its use would be best facilitated if thc extract were male generally available to thc medical profession-
The Lancet understands that sever d firms intend immediately to supply the extract through the usual commerci.i: channels. Thc Medical Research Council’s report states that the extract contains an unknown factor which makes the liver benefiqjal in cases of pernicious anaemia, and would thus be available to patients who are unable to cat liver itself daily in sufficient quantities. Of ,34 patients treated with the extract, 32 showed a good response. Single doses gave a maximum reaction on the 14th day, and double doses on thc fifth day. In one instance 750,000 red cells became 5,000,000 in 34 days.
