April 28, 30 Waikato R.C. Autumn. .May 3. s—Nelson J.C. May 17, 19—Wanganui J.C. Winter. NOTES AND COMMENTS The Whangarei Racing Club will hold the autumn meeting to-day. The Mastertoll Racing Club’s meeting will conclude to-day. The autumn meeting of the Hororaia Racing Club will be held to-day. Provided all is well with him, Jovial, by Merry Moment —Sanguine, may be hard to beat in the minor steeplechaser at Riverton. W. Jones will ride Automne, and E. Ludlow Wee Marble at the Whangarei meeting to-day. Mr T. M. Wilford has disposed of the Gasbag representative Rotowhero to Mr G. Burt, of Featherstone. Rotowhero will ever be remembered for the bumper price he returned at Otaki at his first winning essay. Airtight was very unlucky to suffer defeat on the second day of the Rangitikei meeting. The Trentham trainer, 11. Telford, is having three of his rising two-year-olds ridden along, and already two of them shape as it they want to gallon. Both are fillies by Tea Tray, one being from Refinement and the other from Graceful. Mount Marta raced at Bulls in the name of Mr J. R. L- Stanford, in whose colours Bercola won both the Great Northern and Grand National Steeplechases. ’Frisco Jack, who enjoyed four successes out of five times out last season, figures among the entries for the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie next month- Little of a serious nature ■as been asked of him as yet this season. Adjutor is reported to have shaped well in a training bout over four Hights of hurdles at Wingatui on a recent morning. The Solferino gelding Tholomou js again in work at Wingatui. F. Tilley will split his team at Easter. Laughing Prince, Limited. Freehold and Mundane are booked to go to Auckland. Limited, who is under offer to Australia, may not go on that account. Ruanui and Thrift are to race at Feilding. Eulalie is galloping in great style on the tracks at Riccarton and is sure to be one of the prime fancies for the Great Easter Handicap if she starts. Staghunter will probably race at the Masterton meeting on Saturday, and leave for Auckland on Monday. With J. Barry going to Riccarton, ~ fresh rider will have to be found for Staghunter and Wild Pigeon at Auckland.

Karamu, who is now trained at Takinini, is reported to be doing well in his work, and the bay gelding will most likely make his next appearance in the Brighton Hurdle Race.

R. E. Brown has taken Thursby in hand again, although his tasks at the present time are chiefly confined to road work. Thursby, who usually performs best when the tracks are soft, will soon have conditions to suit himThat good and game horse, Rob, has almost outlived his days of usefulness as a racehorse, as he is now so badly affected in the wind that he cannot foot it with the company with which he has been used to compete or see out a reasonable distance. He was never in the picture at the Oamaru J-C. meeting last week. When the mail to hand last evening left Australia the New Zealander, Limerick, was galloping well on the Sydney tracks, hence he probably went out at a .short price for the Rawson .Stakes, the event which he won st Rosehill on Saturday. Nincompoop has been a trifle unlucky in important handicaps this season, and with an ounce of luck he may be led in a winner. The Absurd gelding acted as runner-up in the Winter, Invercargill, and Waimate Cups, and on that form he cannot be discarded for the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton, in which he will carry the luxurious impost of 7.8.

The smart three-year-old novice, Meadow Lark, who ran well at the Oamaru meeting, is by Songbird from Unawed, by Markhope—Unawares, by Gipsy Grand —Ambush, by Vanguard— Fairy Maid, an old-fashioned but stout pedigree on the dam’s side. He is a perky young Songbird.

Corinax has raced well recently, though he has been somewhat unlucky since he won at Rotorua. He was finishing very fast at the end of the Franklin Cup, and in the Ohinemuri Cup was unlucky in the running. With 7.7 in th(* Whangarei Cup he will be one of the fancied division.

The New Zealand-born horseman, M. McCarten, has had quite a run of success in Sydney of late, and it is safe to say that he acted as Limerick’s pilot when the son of Limond won at Rosehill on Saturday. It almost looks as if McCarten developed special form to be ready for supreme action when Limerick came to hand.

Eden Hall usually races well at Whangarei, and even with 9.3 in the Mdnnes Memorial he is sure to run a good race- He won the Takapuna Cup with 8.2, and was unlucky in not winning the Takapuna Handicap with 9.0. Since then he finished second in the Ohinemuri Cup with 8.7, so that a rise of 101 b is not prohibitive.

The hurdle racer Atapo is at present in the paddock and his owner states that he is likely to remain there for some time to come.

At the V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield on March 17 the Orrong Two-year-old Handicap was attractively won by 4 colt called Balmerino, by All Black — Anna, who is owned by Mr J. Edmond, probably identical with a sportsman who used to race horses in Southland from the late 11. Goodman’s stable. The Melbourne youngster event referred to was worth £650- Balmerino is spoken of as a colt of more than average ability.

Pinon was a good sort a season or two ago, but she is not too sound, and M. J- Carroll has had some trouble in getting her into racing condition again. However, she has only got to repeat her best form to be in the money before long. Pinon is among those engaged at Whangarei, but she cannot be ready, seeing she has not raced for the best part of two years.

Dave usually races well at Whangarei, and with 8.10 he has to be given a chance in the Stewards’ Handicap today, provided he is all right. On the first day of the Takapuna meeting, Dave was second in the Stewards’ Handicap to Tea Time, and on the se-

cond day won the Suburban Handicap. He finished third at Rotorua and subsequently went sore and has not raced since then.

Macroom has been accepted for in ’the Mdnnes Memorial, one mile and three furlongs, at Whangarei to-day. but the distance may be a bit beyond her. At the Franklin meeting she was tried over nine furlongs and failed over the last bit, but in the President’s Handicap at Paeroa, one mile and 110 yards, she led all the way and won. She lias 8.12 in the Stewards’ Handicap and that may be her mission.

Whaka King showed .sufficient form at Paeroa recently to suggest that when the Kink Lupin gelding was stepped out in a sprint event he would be a tough opponent. At Tauranga on Saturday he scored a decisive win in the Flying Handicap, and although the field he beat did not represent very good class, it was the manner in which he accomplished his task that pleasedIt should not be long before the chestnut gelding is again pushing his way to the front.

There was a lot. of merit in the win of Black Duke in the Anniversary Handicap at the Oamaru meeting- He had to make all his own running under a big weight, and he stalled off Wingatui’s late challenge in impressive style. This performance, following on two wins at Waimate, showed Black Duke Bp as a horse who has not reached the limit of his improvement, and he may win in better company before the season is much further advanced.

While engaged in schooling the Absurd mare. Lady Cintra, at Te Awnmutu on Tuesday, the well-known horseman, J. Mcßae received a uasty spill. His mount took off too far from one obstacle with the result that she fell heavily. Mcßae was unconscious when picked up and medical attention disclosed that he was suffering from concussion, and was also badly bruised. So far as is known, Lady Cintra escaped injury.

Exalted showed good form at the last Dargayillo meeting, finishing second ixi the Maiden Handicap, six furlongs, on the first day and winning the open sprint, the Omana Handicap, on the second day, Exalted, who is a daughter of Leighton, can go fast over a short course, and she would only need to be in her best form to be hard to beat in the Portland Handicap at Whangarei to-day.

The Thorn has not had a race since he returned from Australia, but he is due to make his reappearance at the Whangarei meeting to-day in the Stewards’ Handicap, six furlongs. The distance may perhaps be a bit short for him. He is also in the Waipu Handicap, one mile. However, he has-been training on satisfactorily at headquarters since his return and should soon be at his best.

Since being taken up a short time back Kendal has been doing the bulk of his work on the tan track and the chestnut gelding is rounding up nicely. Kendal has been a good performer over country in the past and should still be capable of paying his wav in jumping events.

High Finance won the Manaia Handicap, the principal sprint event on the opening day of the spring meeting of the Whangarei Racing Club last November. She carried 7-13 on that occasion. Since then she won the Stewards’ Handicap on the second day of the Taranaki meeting, carrying 7.9 A, beating among others, Kiosk. High Finance will only need to be at her best to-day to make a good showing with 7.13 in the Stewards’ Handicap at Whangarei.

Although Awarere has yet to prove his ability to go a mile in first-class company, it can be taken for granted that his track work has been encouraging if the Swift Light gelding takes his place in the Easter Handicap. Awarere has been getting through useful work at Te Awamutu. and as Aussie races in the same ownership they should play an important part in the finish.

THE WHANGAREI MEETING TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS. The Whangarei Racing Club will hold their one-day meeting to-day. Fairly good fields are the order and a successful meeting should eventuate. The following should show up in their engagements:— Trial Stakes.—Kerry Dance, Footpad and Miss Myrtle. Portland Hack.—Melissa, Welcome Home and Palmares. Mdnnes Memorial.—Eden Hall, Corinax and Macroom. Stewards’ Handicap.—High Finance, Macroom and Ned Kelly. Northland Hurdles.—Wendav, Scot Free. Settlers’ Handicap.
