HARNESS AND SADDLE

OPENING DAY OF WANGANUI TROTS LARGE FIELDS AND CLOSE FINISHES Mild antiimn weather with brilliant sunshine favoured the opening day yesterday of the Wanganui Trotting Club's annual totalisator meeting, and with excellent fields and close finishes there was only the support of the public required to make the fixture the most successful yet. Unfortunately it was in this latter respect that the meeting was to a certain degree lacking. Only £7.240 10s was handled by the totalisator. as compared with £9,399 on the first day last year—a decrease of £2,158 10s. Perhaps it is that patrons of the turf have not yet awakened to a realisation of the rapid strides being made on this coast in tha advancement of the light harness sport. As soon as this is noted, by the public the local club cannot fail to go ahead. It showed yesterday that it is producing the goods. The principal race of the day, the Wanganui Cup, was woa by the Ashhurst owned and trained High Sea, while the Presir dent's Handicap was won by the Aucklander Lady Ena.

Club officials all worked for the efficient management of the day’s sport and in this they succeeded thoroughly, although delay in one department over which the officials had no control resulted in races getting a little behind hand in starting.

There were no accidents to mar the day’s pleasure, and only one inquiry was held, the stipendiary steward investigating the running of Mokanna in the President’s Handicap. The Explanation of the driver, A. Corrigan, was however, accepted.

Easy For Peter Pirate.

Nothing but Peter Pirate was wanted for the Innovation Handicap, and the promising three-year-old did not distppoint. The bracket Von and Great Delight was next fancied. From a good start Welcome Pearl showed out from Great Delight the field settling down with this pair in front, followed by Tawa King, Peter Pirate and Indicator. Entering the straight the first time Great Delight took the lead from Welcome Pearl and Tawa King and passing the stand the order was Great Delight, Welcome Pean, Tawa Hing, Louie Dillon and Huia Maid. Raring up the bark Great Delight still led from Welcome Pearl, Louie Dillon. Huia Maid and Indicator, with Tawa King and Peter Pirate next. At the half-mile post Great Delight till led from Huia Maid, Welcome Pearl and Indicator, with Peter Pirate and Louie Dillon next. Great Delight was just turning into the straight, but Peter Pirate then came with a fine finishing inn to win with something in hand by half a length from Great Delight with Huia Maid about four lengths away

third and Welcome Pearl fourth just in front of Indicator.

Public Right Again.

The public picked the first three horses accurately, in the Kirkwood Handicap, Mokanna carrying twice as much money as Lady Ena, w'ith Nelson’s Request third in order of favouritism.

May Rita was first to strike the front, followed by Lady Ena and Mokanna with Carberley fourth. Going out of the straight Lady Ena took charge from May Rita, Mokanna, Nelson’s Request and Carberley. Half a mile from home Mokanna joined Lady Ena with Nelson’s Request still handy, while Carberley broke and gave place to La Campione. Racing into the straight there was little between Mokanna, Lady Ena and Nelson’s Request. In a good finish Mokanna just beat Lady Ena, who broke a chain off the post by half a neck, Nelson’s Request b“ing 12 lengths away third and Carberley fourth.

The Favourite Once More.

The scrttching pen was freely used in the Eastbrooke Handicap, the field being reduced to eight starters. Bell Dial came in for the greatest support, tarrying about 150 tickets more than Warplane with Richmond Lass also in demand. Lady Zoe and Darby Lynn failed to settle down in the running and Great Ballin went out in front from Hilltop, Bell Dial. Warplane, Richmond Lass and Nellie Parsons. Past the stand Bell Dial led Hilltop, Great Ballin. Nellie Parsons and Warplane. Into the back stretch Bell Dial had a useful lead from Hilltop, Nellie Parsons. Warplane and Great Ballin. Bell Dial wa° just in front of Hilltop, racing into the straight, followed by Nellie Parsons. Warplane and Great Ballin. In a fine finish Bell Dial held the lead to win by a head from Nellie Parsons with Hilltop half a length away third and Warplane some distance off fourth. ... Fine Finish To Cup. Explosion was installed a firm favourite for the Wanganui Cup, carrying twice as much as the second choice, Lady Barrington. Brigadier, Kevin Brae and Tui Wildwood also came in for a fair measure of support. At the start Van Cap. Brigadier, Syringa and Our Nancy failed to strike their gait and High Sea led down the straight from Master Cute, Lottie Advance, Lady Barrington, Clive Bell, Kevin Brae and Explosion. At the half-mile High Sea was just in front of Master Cute, with Lady Barrington and Lottie Advance following and some distance away Clive Bell, Explosion, Kevin Brae, Tui Wildwood and Our Nancy. Past the stand the second time there was little between High Sea, Lady Barrington, Master Cute and Lottie Advance, the quartette being followed by Explosion. Clive Bell, Kevin Brae and Tui Wildwood. Racing up the back Lady Barrington went to the front followed by Lottie Advance, High Sea, Explosion, Clive Bell and Master Cute. Round the bend Lottie Advance led by a length and ahalf from Lady Barrington and High Sea while four lengths away came Clive Bell. Kevin Brae and Tui Wildwood. To the home turn the order was Lottie

Advance just in front of Lady Barrington,- High Sea, Tui Wildwood, Kevin Brae. Lottie Advance had a couple of lengths lead but she tired badly and was beaten by half a length by High Sea. Tui Wildwood finished very fast and failed to get Lottie Advance by half a neck. Gold Dial was fourth ami Lady Barrington fifth. Autumn To Lena Chimes. Lena Chimes was installed a firm favourite for the Autumn Handicap, the bracket being next and Nellie Parsons also in demand. Blue Peter started best from Lena Chimes, Indicator, Cora Tacks and Some Jazz. Going up the back Lena Chimes led Indicator, Blue Pedro and Cora Tacks while some distance away were Some Jazz and Lady Kevin. At the half-mile Lena Chimes and Indicator were together in front of Blue Pedro, Cora Tacks, Lady Kevin, Some Jazz and Abrudbanya. Round the bend into the straight Blue Pedro broke badly as Indicator passed. The order of the leaders at that stage was Lena Chimes just in front of Indicator, Cora Tacks, Lady Kevin and Matenga. Lena Chimes and Cora Tacks fought out the finish, the former getting the verdict by a length. Twelve lengths away Nellie Parsons finished third and Matenga fourth.

Lady Ena All the Way.

Call Buy was in demand for the President’s Htndicap, carrying about 50 tickets more than the next fancy, Colonel Thorpe, while Mokanna was err.trusted with about the same number of tickets less than Colonel Thorpe.

All wnt off fairly well with the exception of Rebecca, which skipped for some distance. The order when the field settled down was Lady Ena, Colonel Thorpe, Rebecca, Call Boy and Mokanna. Lady Ena continued to lead over the first round her closest attendants being Colonel Thorpe and Rebecca, '-liile Call Boy and Mokanna followed. Rebecca skipped two or three times in the first round, but lost little ground. Going down the straight the second time Lady Ena led Colonel Thorpe, Rebecca, and Call Boy with Mokanna and Tai Bells 20 lengths in the rear. Racing up the back the last time Lady Ena still led from Call Boy, Colonel Thorpe and Rebecca, which was skipping, but losing little ground. Into the straight Lady Ena was just in front of Call Boy with Rebecca and Colonel Thorpe handy and the other pair beaten off. Lady Ena and Call Boy were fighting out the finish when Colonel Thorpe put in a strong challenge and beat Call Boy for second place, finishing a head behind the winner Lady Ena. A neck separated Colonel Thorpe and Call Boy and Rebecct was a handy fourth.

Sailor Boy Surprises.

There was little demand for anything but Fliton and C. Advanceur in Foster’s Handicap, the remainder of the field coming in for poor support. The field got away to a good start although Van Mac wnt up in the air. Logan Star was first to hit the front, followed by C. Advanceur, Sailor Boy, Richmond Lass, and Fliton. At the half-mile C. Advanceur just showed the way to Sailor Boy with Fliton, Bell Dial and Richmond Lass all well placed and Louisiana, Van Mack and The Abbey following. Past the stand C. Advanceur and Sailor Boy led from Fliton, Louisiana, Bell Dial, Richmond Lass and Aan Mac. C. Advanceur continued to lead to the straight being just in front of Sailor Boy closely followed by Fliton and Louisiana with Logan Star and Bell Dial next. Sailor Boy was first to turn for home and went on to win by two lengths from C. Advanceur with Fliton three lengths away third and Louisiana close up fourth.

Hal Huon Takes Last.

For the final event of the day Direct Todd was installed favourite but there was plenty of support for Hal Huon. Explosion and Sister Beatrice were also fancied.

Hal Huon failed to strike his gait and Item was first out followed by Clive Bell, Master Cute; Lottie, Advance and Direct Todd. At the stand the first time Item was well out from Direct Todd, Lottie Ad vance, Master Cute, Hal Huon, Wrigley, Nellie Bramley and Admiral Lock. Racing into the back stretch Item was just in front of Lottie Advance -with Master Cute and Direct Todd next, followed by Hal Huon, Wrigley and Admiral Lock. When a mite and a-half had gone there was little between Item, Lottie Advance, Direct Todd, tnd Master Cute with Hal Huon right up. Wrigley and Admiral Lock were next. Lottie Advance then assumed control followed by Direct Todd, Master Cute and Hal Huon with Admiral Lock close up. Hal Huon was first to straighten up in the run home and went on to win by two lengths from Admiral Lock with Direct Todd the same distance away third and Lottie Advance a neck away fourth.
