Villages Demolished in th: Camic Alps
PANIC SCENES (By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.) Received Al arch 29, 7.50 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) ROME, Alarch 28. Investigation of the earthquake in the Camic. Alps shows that the shake was more serious than was anticipated. Twenty-five were killed in Cannta by falling masonry and many were seriously injured. The church, collapsed at Verzcgnis, just after 1000 people had left, who had been attending a service of prayer that the earthquake should spare the village. They were hardly out of the building when it collapsed, and the officiating priest was crushed to death. Verzcgnis was practically destroyed, as nearly all the houses collapsed. Five dead have so far been taken from tne ruins.
A terrible panic occurred at Tol mezzo, where great masses from the mountains fell, increasing the destruction. Troops are actively searching for the dead and imprisoned, in the damaged area. They are also busy demolishing buildings which show signs of collapsing. Anxiety is felt for the isolated villages in the higher parts of the Carnie Alps, no news of which has becu rtr ccived since Tuesday.
