AMANULLAH’S TOUR TRIP DOWN SHIP CANAL. (Bq Radio). RUGBY, March 28. King Amanullah of Afghanistan spent this morning visiting the industrial works at Manchester. At the factory of the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company he saw some of the largest • electrical plant yet manufactured in this country, and was shown the latest electrical devices. Later the King journeyed in a launch down the Manchester ship canal towards Liverpool. The launch carried the Afghan tlag, and each ship berthed in the canal dipped its colours as it passed. The canal banks were lined at different points by groups of people who cheered and waved to King Amanullah.
The King, standing on the captain ’s bridge, acknowledged the cheers by raising his hat. The launch went as far as Barton Viaduct, which was swung back so that the King could see this marvel of modern engineering. In the afternoon King Amanullah visited a coal mine on the outskirts of Manchester and inspected the mine working. The King has a royal way of doing things. When asked to sign an autograph book at Sheffield for an ex-sol-dier crippled in the war, he slipped a £lOO note into the man’s hand. March 29 lhe diplomatic correspondent of the Daily Tefegraph states that Britain views King Amanullah’s coming visit to Moscow with serenity. Biitish Ministers perfectly understand his reasons and have nothing to fear in camparison between conditions in Russia and Britain.
The correspondent adds that advantage has been taken of the King’s visit to have a series of heart-to-heart talks with him on Anglo-Afghan affairs.
