CRITICAL INJURIES

MAN KICKED BY HORSE ACCIDENT ON TRAIN. Attracted by groans and the sounds of a horse kicking, porters opened ft horse-box the Palmerston North train at Alarton late yesterday afternoon and found the attendant of the horses lying beneath the horse’s feet covered with blood.

The young man, whose name is Harry Barrymore, aged 29. was In charge o’ Air Mitchell’s trotting horses which wore proceeding to Wanganui for the meeting to-day. Dr Dick was summoned, and after a brief examination ordered the man to Hazebrouck hospital, where he is now’ lying in a critical condition. He is suffering wounds on the scalp, the temple, a broken jaw and infernal injuries. The loose-box in which the accident occurred was a large one, made to accommodate four horses, but there was

very little space for a man to move about. Barrymore had a mate for the first part of the journey, but he left tho train before Alarton to join the express to Wanganui. Apparently Bariymore heard a disturbance among the horses and went forward to investigate. It is surmised that when he was adjusting the cover, the trotter A'an ATac kicked him and caused him to fall. After that tho horse must have become alarmed and kicked and trampled, thus cutting and bruising the man ’s head and body. The amount of blood which was spattered round tho compartment indicated that the injured man must have boon in the T<ox for some time after the accident occurred, before he was found.

The latest reports from Alarton last night stated that the man was still in a very serious condition.
