IN NEW SOUTH WALES
THE STATE CONFERENCE UNEMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRY (A. & N.Z.) SYDNEY, March 27. The Premier (Air T. K. Bavin) opened the conference of representatives of employers and employees called by the State Government to discuss the causes of unemployment and to recommend means oi increasing employment.
Air Bavin, in his opening speech, stressed the regradation and hardship inflicted on those willing to work but unable to obtain employment. He stressed the hope that the delegates would accept his assurance that there was no political element whatever in
the conference, so far as the Government was concerned. The desire of the Government was to obtain a frank and independent opinion of the causes of me abnormal existent unemployment and the possibility of removing them. They desire a frank and friendly discussion, so that any circumstances surrounding industry in New South Wales which prevented an extension of private enterprise or restricted employment by private enterprise might bo identified and, if possible, removed. Labour delegates asked if the unions could show that something should be placed on the Statute Book which was not there already, would the Government take the necessary steps.
Air Bavin replied: “Of course, yes. That is the object of the conference.
