NO FUNDS
THE MALTA TREASURY CAB DRIVERS’ STRIKE (A. & N.Z.) MALTA, March 26. Because the cab-drivers have struck, the Treasury will be without funds from March 31 till April 11. Sir Gerald Strickland’s allegation that the Opposition Senators were supporting the cab drivers was indignantly repudiated and a withdrawal was demanded. Sir Gerald refused. Thereupon the Senate adjourned till April 11 as a protest without passing the Appropriation Bill.
The prospect of being without money for eleven days has led to such hostility towards responsible Senators that the police are guarding them. The situation is tense, Sir Gerald is considering petitioning the King to amend the constitution, reserving to the Assembly financial control.
