HONEY-MAKING

DECISION IN ENGLAND FEELING IN NEW ZEALAND The following is from a London paper;— i he recommendation of the standing committee set up by the British Government under the Merchandise Marks Act that all honey imported into Great Britain shall be marked with an indication of origin should give great satisfaction to New Zealand honey producers. This recommendation meaus that (a) the word “Empire” or “Foreign” must be affixed in the case of honey derived entirely from countries within the Empire, or from foreign countries; (b) there must be a definite indication, of all countries of origin of the honeys forming the blend; or (c) the words “Blended imported’’ must be used.

New Zealand, represented by the High Commissioner (Sir James Parr) ana Messrs A. J. Mills and Co. (representing the N.Z- Honey Producers’ Board), was one of the strongest supporters of the imported honey- It might be mentioned that New Zealand finds that its chief competition comes from a brand of imported honey purporting to be of Empire origin, but which is largely American. This fact was disclosed during the taking of evidence. Sir James Parr, with the strong co-operation of Messrs. A. J. Mills and Co., put forth the utmost efforts to have the full merits of the New Zealand honey fully placed before the committee, and urged that the New Zealand producers had much to gain from the proposals, which would protect their interests on the Home market.

The last number of the Scottish Beekeeper, in an article published by Mr Arthur M. Sturgoss, B.Sc., refers co the case presented on behalf of New Zealand, and adds: “Should the order be granted it will be largely due to the New Zealand evidence.’’
