John Lawler, aged 35, of Sydney Street, Petone, a single man employed by the Gear Meat Company, was found drowned on the Petone beach yesterday. Stanley Menzies, aged 24, pleaded guilty at Hamilton yesterday to forging a cheque for £193 4s ami was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. A large woolshed and slaughter house on Rotoror Island were destroyed by fire on. AVednesday night. The shed was full of oat sheaves. It was insured by the Salvation Army, but there was no insurance on the contents. A Pahiatua telegram states that, a fire destroyed a jive-roomed house, and the adjoining washhouse on the Hock Road, owned by a Konini settler, Mr A. Henisy. The house has been unoccupied for some time. The insurances are £575 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe. Replying to a deputation yesterday morning reports a Christchurch, telegram, the Minister of Lands foreshadowed legislation enabling the Government to sell many small reserves taken from sub-divisions of land, the money to be use»d, for helping larger domains. • As the result, of the burning of his house at To Ore Ore on Wednesday night, Harry Scott, aged 55, lost hrfl life. Scott was sleeping in the house alone and when the fire was noticed by a neighbour it was too late to effect a rescue, the remains later being ..found in the debris. Replying to a deputation at Christchurch yesterday that asked for Government assistance towards the cost of experiments in the storage of onions, the Premier said that the Scientific Department and the Agricultural Department had certain funds, and he would inquire how far these could Lc used.
