BROADCASTING SPORTS

A NOVEL PROPOSAL. Sporting events with much of their side-line thrill may be reproduced in the home by a new application of radio science. Thus an owner of an ordinary receiving set with the addition of special equipment can see both racehorses and football and other games, says Dr J. H. Roberts, London electrical scientist, who has developed the new idea.

The competition will be reproduced by models, which will move under impulses controlled at the race track or playing field. “Telemotion.” is the name given to this new feature of radio by Dr Roberts, who has gained wide note in physical research and investigation involving electrical apparatus. “At the racecourse,” stated Dr Roberts, “a small wireless transmitter is employed with other subsidiary appliances. The telemovie, that is, the receiving apparatus at home, consists of a model race track with model horses. This miniature track is connected by a wire to the ordinary receiver. When the race is about to begin, indicators tell which of the horses are running and to which of the numbered model horses they correspond. Immediately after the race starts the model horses begin to move in the same way as their living counterparts miles away. ’ ’ In much the same way the progress of a football match can be watched at a distance. By an alternative device the action of the contest may be thrown on a screen by a simple optical system. Other uses claimed for “telemotion” include the transmission of stock exchange prices, and its employment by a train signalman to indicate the exact position, of trains.
