A KING AMONG CARS

THE SUPERB CADILLAC HARMANS DIBPLAY GENERAL MOTORS’ LINES •Standing aloof from J.a follow?, over shadowing them as a giant towers above a pigmy, General Motors’ supreme achievement, the Cadillac, had a host of admirers when JI. H. Barman’s stand was opened tq the public yesterday afternoon. The model on view is the five passenger sports phaeton, and seldom, if ever, has a more beautiful example of the motor-builder’s skill been exhibited in this city. The engine, the bodywork, the upholstery—all are of tho best, and an inspection of the car makes one cease to wonder why more Cadillacs were sold last year than all other American cars in the same prico class put together, and why the output of 10U cars a day is barely sufficient to meet the demand. The world-famous eight-cylinder engine, V-typo (aeroplane style) ia a picture, representing the climax of 13 years’ constant study and experiment by America’s foremost motor experts, and an interesting feature, exclusive to Cadillac, is the carburetter, equipped with two rheostats, ono regulating the height of the petrol in the jet,, and the other controlling the air intake passages. This attachment effectively controls the gas supply in all weathers, proving of great utility to the owner. Another gadget which will no doubt be extensively copied by other makers in the near future is a light in the valence, which automatically operates when the door is opened, lighting the step—a refinement greatly to be appreciated on a dark night. Fisher Bodies Lend. Distinction Tho great length of the wheel base (138 inches) combines with wonderful springing and deep-cushioned seats to make the Cadillac the most comfortable riding car in the world, and tho powerful, vibrationless motor may exert its full strength without troubling the occupants to the slightest degree. Ajfeature of tho rear seat is the arm which is normally forming a section of tho back rest can bo lowered at will, turning the seat into two luxurious armchairs. There arc other refinements aplenty on the Cadillac, which make it a car for a prince. Yet th© prtce is but little more than that of many another auto that offers nothing in comparison with this —the climax of America’s motor car development. • “Body by Fisher.” —For years this has been the hall-mark of quality, recognised in the motor car markets of the world, and with the superb Cadillac, all other products of • General Motors share in the distinction it gives to the modern auto. On Harman’s stand are other fine examples of this great corporation’s products. The Pontiac, the world’s lowest priced six cylinder car, though only in its second year of has established itself firmly, as is shown by the fact that by its first birthday 86,000 cars had been sold. Looking at the new model, one can readily conceive this total being eclipsed easily this year, for motor, body and “trimmings” all reach a high standard. One notable festure is the divided cylinderhead. »This is an improvement that cannot but satisfy, as it makes servieeing much easier, only half the head having to be removed for adjustments and cylinder repairs. Performance and Appearance Another well-known member of the General Motors’ family is the dependable Oakland, which is growing in popularity each year among discriminating buyers, who demand a high class car that will stand up to plenty of haxd work and give year-out performance. Body lines are much improved in the new model, and there are many notable additions to the already full equipment, notably a dimming switch operated by the foot. This is a welcome innovation, removing as it docs the necessity for the driver to relax his grip on the wheel when approaching or passing other traffic —a necessity that is productive of many an accident.

Then there is the new Chevrolet. General Motors do not exaggerate when they term it “the most beautiful Chevrolet.” It is indeed a very smart car, ideal for the man who wants a bus that will take him anywhere, any time, on which running costs must bo low. The Chevrolet fills the bill in this respect, as the passing years have shown abundanty, but alongside its tireless, dependable service, Chevrolet provides a maximum comfort and elegance of appearance. That is why this line, far and away the best of the carlight price cars, has maintained and increased in public favour. And there is another reason, too, and ono that should strike a responsive chord in the hearts of. all New Zealanders; the Chevrolet is a New Zealand car to a greater extent than any other. U is assembled at General Motors’ huge plant at Petone, where 240 New Zealanders find constant employment, and over 58 per cent of its value goes in paying New Zealanders’ wages and providing New Zealand materials. Among the trade displays at tho show H. S. Harman-s is one of the most outstanding, and a visit is made most interesting by th** staff, who are assiduous in showing the visitors all there is to be seen on this well-ap-pointed and conveniently situated stand.
