BERNARDI’S FEAT
WORLD’S SPEED RECORD BRITISH ’PLANE MAY GO ONE BETTER (By Radio) RUGBY, Nov. 7. The new air speed record set up by the Italian, Major de Bernardi, is
not likely to stand long unchallenged. Preparations are already nearing completion in this country for an attempt at over 300 miles an hour. When Flight-Lieut. Webster put up the speed record of 285 miles an hour in the Schneider Cup race his speed included flying round two acute corners and as the necessary slowing up to take these corners must have had a detrimental effect on his average speed, experts are confident that the Supermarine Napier is capable of beating Major de Bernardi’s speed on a straight course. Average speed tests will take place at Calshot over a measured course of three kilometres which will be flown twice in each direction, the average speed of the four flights being that counted in the record.
It is probable that the pilot will be Flight-Lieutenant Worsley, who was second in the Schneider Cup race and the machine will be an improved Supermarine Napier.
