ROWING
FIRST TROPHY RACE WANGANUI CLUB FOURS. FINAL FOR TO-MORROW EVENING On Monday evening the initial heats of the Wanganui Rowing Club’s Fours, the first trophy race of the season, were decided on the river. The contests excited a great deal of interest and the progress of each ev&nt was followed with keen enthusiasm by club mates on the bank. Crease stroked the crew of the winning boat in the first heat, beating Durie by some three lengths. The winning four were Crease (str.), Liassen, Brown, Barnes (bow). In the second heat victory went to Caiman’s crew, who finished two lengths ahead of Dickson’s four. The winning crew consisted of Caiman (str.), McAllum, Friend, Spray (bow).
In a Novice Pairs contest Benson and Craig finished a length ahead of Tulloch and McMasters.
Last evening the semi-finals of the Fours were decided under good weather conditions, the water being calm and a slight drizzzle before the events served only to clear the air. Crease beat Caiman by the narrow margin of half a length after a good struggle, while in the earlier event Foster beat Cass rather easily.
Foster’s crew consisted of Foster (str.), Hobbs, Atchison, Raeburn, (bow), and the loses were Cass (str.), flarlson, G. Burgess, Keating (bow). E. Long and K. Prouse beat Dorrell and Burford in a heat of the Novice Pairs.
This evening Hayhow rows Benson in a heat of the Novice Pairs, the final of which will be decided to-mor-row evening.
At five o’clock to-morrow evening the final of the Club Fours contest will also be held and a great struggle is expected between Foster and Crease. There is certain to be a large crowd of supporters of the respective crews to urge them on to victory. The next club event will be for the Wray Eights, entries for which are now being received. The crews will be announced on Saturday and the event will be decided about the end of November. It is interesting to note that the Collegiate School have signified their intention of entering a representative eight for this event. The annual youths’ race between the Wanganui Collegiate School and the Wanganui Rowing Club will take place at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, December 9, just prior to the departure of the 1 School rowing team to Christchurch to 'participate in the annual tournament tai th Christ’s College.
