THE SUPREME COURT

A NEW JUDGE NEGOTIATIONS WITH AUCKLAND BARRISTER. [ Special “ Chronicle * Service. ] WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. Wellington legal circles believe that Mr H. Johnston, president of the Auckland Law Society, is certain to be the next Supreme Court Judge. Following the retirement of Mr Justice Stringer, Mr Johnston visited Wellington and remained here for a day. It is understood that the difficulty in the way of Mr Johnston’s appointment is that he wishes to remain in Auckland, whereas it is the practice for a new judge to come to Wellington. It was expected that Mr Justice Reed would go to Auckland (where he practised when appointed to the Bench) after the name of the new judge*was announced, but in the circumstances it is doubtful whether this will happen. It is reported that Mr Justice Reed does not desire to return to the north.
