PRIMARY SCHOOLS

RUGBY REPRESENTATIVES MEET WANGANUI DEFEATS TAIHAPERAINGITIKEI [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service. ] With the view of giving the selectors a chance of picking players of the Taihape and Rangitikei districts in the Wanganui Primary School representative team who will play in the annual tournament in the coming school holidays, a match between Wanganui and a Taihape-Rangitikei combined team was played at Marton Park on Saturday. As a result of recent torrential rain the ground was very heavy. However, the Wanganui boys adapted themselves to the conditions very well, especially in the second spell when they registered all their points. The game was played in four 20-minute spells, and in the second half opening changes of a small nature were made in the formation of the combined team, allowing different boys to be tried out. In the Opening Stages . Combined (green) kicked off, tight scrum work in midfield following. James and heeled cleanly from the first scrum to Gregory, whose pass went astray and a free to the greens saw Ellery gain ground. A hot attack by the blue forwards was spoilt by offside play. Liddicoat next showed up in a good dash down the line, carrying play to Wanganui’s twenty-five. The Wanganui rearguard then figured in a pretty passing bout, Gregory, Vernon, McLenaghan, Mailman and Frith handling in turn, the last-named being pushed-out into touch after a good run. Another free to the combined team let Ellery clear, the same player distinguishing himself in a solo dribble. Following a drop-out Sommerville, fending off a weak attempt to tackle, gained ground for the visitors. The combined backs were not showing to the same advantage as Wanganui and faulty passing let Mailman intercept and carry play to the greens’ twentyfive. Sommerville went away with the ball at toe and Parkes mulled badly, but Peacock forced.

Ellery led the combined van to Wanganui’s territory, the blues being compelled to force. A free to the combined team saw Liddicoat narrowly miss the uprights. This ended the first 20 minutes. Though lacking the combination of the Wanganui backs the combined forces had fully extended the river city boys so far. A hot attack with Still, Siddles and Ellery prominent took play to the visitors’ territory. The greens hammered away with Ellery ever in the limelight and Hamer also prominent. Parkes sent out a crisp pass to Farr who ran across the field and gave an impossible transfer to Peacock, Mailman clearing for the blues. On resumption after the spell thn greens immediately atacked and Liddicoat cleverly ran his backs into position but the passing was very crude and Frith took advantage of it to snap up and run strongly . Brennan, however, brought off a good tackle. Doig, Berryman and Marshall led a hot onslaught to the greens’ line where first Sommerville and then Gregory tried to bullock across. Keeping up the pressure Wanganui were eventually rewarded when McDonald dived across. His kick at goal did not rise. Wanganui were having all the best of matters and Rangitikei forced just before the final spell started. Mailman opened the final session with a spirited dash to the greens’ twentyfive, beating several men en route before transferring to Frith who was forced out by Davey. The combined forwards cleared to the twenty-five mark where Gregory fielded clearly and passed to Vernon, to McLenaghan, to Mailman, to Sommerville who showed a good turn of speed before grounding well out. Again the kick failed to rise. It was all Wanganui now and after a spasmodic attack by the green forwards Doig picked up and sent out to Mailman, to Sommerville, who evaded several would-be tacklers and went across for his second try. McDonald found the ball too heavy. A loose rush by the combined vanguard carried play half the length of the field where Parkes, securing from the base of the scrum, dummied and cut in smartly but held on too long and was grassed. The game ended shortly afterwards with the scores: Wanganui 9 Taihape-Rangitikei 0 Rev. P. H. Leonard was referee. WANGANUI REPRESENTATIVES. SCHOOLBOYS FOR TOURNAMENT. A CRICKET SCORE . BEBBINGTON SHIELD MATCH HOROWHENUA’S BIG MARGIN (Per Press Association.) LEVIN, Aug. 13. Horowhenua successfully defended the Bebbington Shieud at Levin tO’day when they defeated Oroua by 47 points to 21. The challengers were, for three parts of the game, hopelessly outclassed, Horowhenua’s lead half-way through the second spell standing at 44 points to 8. From then on, however they appeared to let up, and Oroua taking advantage of the respite, quickly added another 13 points to their total.

AUCKLAND ON TOUR MATCH AT NEW PLYMOUTH TARANAKI TEAM OUTCLASSED (Per Prw« AiMciationJ NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 13. The Auckland Rugby tourists to-day completely outplayed Taranaki before a crowd of about 7000, the score of 23 points to nil being no exaggeration of the difference between the teams on the day’s play. In view of Taranaki’s recent matches an even contest was anticipated, but Auckland were superior in every department. Taranaki obviously played below form and lacked the combination and bright passing tactics in which Auckland excelled, while the tackling of the hobie team was deplorable. The day was fine but the ground still heavy from the recent rain. Early Taranaki looked like making the pace hot but soon Lucas, Sheen and Anderson and Hook handled for the latter to score. Berridge missed an easy kick. Sheen dummied his way through and sent Hook away to score and Berridge easily converted, making the half-time score: Auckland 8 Taranaki 0 Presently Sheen who was playing brilliantly potted a fine field goal. Hook broke away and passed to Meyer who scored in the corner. Berridge could not convert. A loose sweeping rush by Auckland ended in McWilliams scoring in the corner and again Berridge failed. Wood went on in place of Sheen and immediately made a great run and sent out for Lucas to score. Berridge easily converted. Every man in the Auckland team played well, handling the ball with delightful precision. Taranaki would not go down to their rushes and seldom got going in effective offensive movements, but that can hardly be relied upon as their true form on the tour starting next week. THE SEDDON SHIELD FINE It ALLY BY NELSON BULLEE’S EARLY LEAD (Per Press Association.) NELSON, Aug. 13. There was sunny weather and a large attendance for the Seddon' Slueld match to-day and the ground was in good order. For the first thirty minutes it looked as though Nelson had gone to pieces. The Buller forwards, playing fine football, made the game lively and liever allowed the Nelson backs to get away. The ball was in Buller territory only once in this period. Buller had scored two tries, one being converted, when Nelson rallied and thenceforward their backs dominated the game. The half-time score was: Buller 8, Nelson 5. Shortly after the resumption McGregor opened up play for Nelson and passed to Wallace who scored. A fine try by Buller gave them the lead again but they made no further score, while Nelson added a penalty goal and a converted try. The Buller forwards showed signs of tiring half-way through the second spell and the final stages of the game was uninteresting. Kearns the Buller wing, was injured while scoring shortly after half-time. The game ended: Nelson 18, Buller 11. Nelson’s tries were obtained by Wallace (2) and Snodgrass. Snodgrass did all Nelson’s kicking including the penalty. Ail the Nelson backs played well. For Buller Caldwell, O’Neill and Kearns scored tries one of which was converted. Sherlock and Griffiths were outstanding in the Buller backs and all the forwards, especially McKnight, played a fine game. SUPERIOR CONDITION WAIROA LOSES BARRY CUP (Per Press Association.) WAIROA, Aug. 13. The Tolago Bay Sub-Union representatives defeated the Wairoa team (minus half their best players) to-day and won the Barrv Cup after an exciting finish by 13 points to 11. Superior condition told its tale. LEAGUE TOURISTS MATCH AT WESTPORT CANTERBURY TEAM DEFEATED WESTPORT, Aug. 13. In fine weather to-day and before a large attendance the Canterbury Rugby League touring team played the first match of their tour, suffering defeat at the hands of Buller by 20 points to 10. The game was fast and open.
