AMATEUR ROAD RACING NOTES AND COMMENTS Last Saturday’s event round the Springvale course provided the best finish so far this season. L. Wakeley and Ericcson had a great struggle with Wakeley just getting home by half a wheel. Young Alp, who finished third, put up a good performance and should be leading the field home snortly. The scratch riders were only 50 yards behind at the finish, Bert Cave again being too good for Ken. Anderson in the sprint and taking fastest time honours. Anderson gained second fastest time. H # Wilkie, who has been riding very consistently all the season, is due for a win and when it comes along it W'ill be a popular one. Every Saturday secs new riders coming out and the form shown by most of them is really good and must be very pleasing. A. Beatty, the Wellington rider, who resides here now, put up fastest time in the first race of the season in Wellington out of sixty starters. So far he has not ridden here up to his Wellington form but no doubt he will be giving the back markers trouble shortly. H. Dustin, the popular secretary of the Club, had to enter a hospital on Saturday to undergo an operation. He is progressing favourably but will not be competing again for some months. ( Amateur road racing seems to be having a good spin in New Zealand this season and riders from all centres arc looking forward to the big races later on in the season. It is rumoured that Cave and Beatty intend competing in the next road race to be held in Wellington. There were 145 nominations for the first amateur road race of the season held in Melbourne.
