BIG CRICKET

VISITORS INSPIRED New Zealanders Treat Spectators to Brilliant Display MATCH WITH NOETHANTS. The touring New Zealand cricket team impressed critics by their display in their first innings against Northamptonshire at Kettering. The visitors punished the bowling and knocked up a score of 251 runs in quick time. The home side put up a total of 497, leaving New Zealand with only 246 to get to obtain a win which should not trouble them. Scores. Northants 237 and 260 New Zealand 251 LONDON, June 13. 11 Inspired perhaps by the brilliant summer sunshine and rural prettiness of the Kettering ground, the New Zealanders gave the spectators ninety minutes of cricket as it should be played,’’ says a leading critic. Page and James set the example of playing confidently, but the former was bowled in attempting a big hit, and the latter was unlucky enough to get out from a ball which he did not attempt to play. Dacre Scores Freely.

Dacre gave a display rejoicing the hearts of those who like to see the ball hit. He scored twenty from four consecutive balls, including two sixes, and was caught at leg in trying to hit another out of the ground.

Oliver and Bernau, unmindful of the state of the score, continued the good work, the former punishing Wills to the extent of fifteen in one over. Bernau hit with power and discretion. The visitors hit up 165 in ninety minutes. Jupp came out with an excellent average, claiming seven of the wickets. The earlier Northampshire batsmen did well, and at the tea adjournment the score was three for 121. Walden was bowled by Page immediately on resuming, but Timms reached 46 before he was stumped off Merritt. Home Team Have Blunt’s Measure. Blunt did not meet with his former success. The batsmen had got his measure, and he proved very expensive. Merritt, however, was in good form and, although Pennington and Wright emulated the example of their opponents, and gave a display of free hitting to the great delight of the spectators, the total only reached 260. New Zealand, therefore, have 247 runs to get in the last innings. Details: — New Zealand. First Innings. A FINANCIAL SUCCESS VISITORS’ POPULARITY A DRAW. ATTENDANCE RIVALS AUSSIES. LONDON, June 13. The attendances at the New Zealanders’ matches, though generally small, are probablly sufficient to ensure a financial success. The Saturday crowds at both visits to Lords were excellent and the Saturday attendance at Brighton in the Sussex match equalled that during the Australians’ visit. The team’s popularity and reputation for playing the game are expected to attract crowds in the big County games coming on shortly.

LEADING BOWLERS BEPLY TO CRITICISM Received June 14, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, Junj) 14. Replying to criticism that leading players are being omitted from County cricket teams against the New Zealanders, Sporting Life and Sportsman hastens to give an assurance that the sole in- | tention is to give the bowlers a rest badly needed owing to the unusually hard grounds. The idea that, the Counties can win as they please against the New Zealanders is not held here. The visitors have proved worthy of the steel of any County side. AUSTRALIANS’ TOUR MATCH WITH NOBTH MALAYA June 14, 9 50 p.m. SINGAPORE, June 14. The Australians declared with seven wickets for 346. North Malaya in their first innings made 50 (Macartney took seven wickets for 10 runs and Andrews three for 8) and in the second lost eight wickets for 168 (Macartney four for 41).
